Redux hangs for big instrument when using macros

I have a fresh install on a MacBook Pro M4, 48 GB of RAM.

Installed REAPER and Redux and loaded a pretty big layered drumkit into Redux, which is somewhere around 600 MB on disk. This instrument uses 2 convolver effects and 2 macros connected to Hydras, which in turn are connected to the convolvers. The IR files are pretty small.

Now, I’ve added Redux to a track in REAPER and observed the following:
Each and every time when I move a Macro knob, the GUI freezes for about 20 seconds and the statusbar shows “Instument was successfully saved.” afterwards.

Nothing happens when changing effect parameters directly, it only auto saves every time I change a macro knob.

You can imagine that it’s barely usable like this. I found nothing in the preferences to disable auto save. I also don’t understand why it would do that just by turning a Macro knob, this doesn’t make any sense and is killing performance. Imagine I would like to automate a Macro knob from withing REAPER, would it then constantly save?

What are your thoughts on this?

*EDIT* This might have something to do with REAPER itself, I couldn’t reproduce this when loading Redux into Renoise. Opening a bug in the Cockos forums.

Found the solution myself while randomly browsing through the REAPER plugin settings.

It’s a REAPER issue and has nothing to do with Redux, here’s the solution though, may be useful for other people too:

  • select Redux in the FX chain
  • look for the “+” button top right (the toolbar right above the Redux UI)
  • select “Compatibility settings” → “Save minimal undo states”

Done.
