Redux in Reaper: Moving Macro Knob freezes cursor

Hey,

First of all I want to say the new updates to Redux and Renoise are fantastic! The new features are impressive and the crashes that I previously reported are now fixed. So overall I am very happy with Redux & Renoise :grinning:
Thanks to taktik/the Renoise team. I really appreciate your work.

I’ve noticed a somewhat minor issue with Redux (occuring in both 1.4.0 and 1.4.1).
that only occurs when the host is REAPER (v7.33/win64) but doesn’t happen when the host is Dorico or Renoise:

Macros freezing Redux UI in REAPER:
When tweaking macros, the mouse cursor changes to the hourglass icon and Redux UI freezes.
The freezing seems to last longer with larger/more complicated instruments it seems? I’ll upload an instrument (Sonar Metallic Drums.xrni) that has produced the longest ā€œfreezeā€ time of all the instruments I’ve tried. And a GIF to show the behavior:
ReduxHourGlass

And I’ll also include my Redux log file:
Log.txt (19.4 KB)

Windows 10, 64-bit

A few extra details:

  • The freezing doesn’t happen while I’m making continuous changes to the macro; only once I have stopped changing the macro for some number of milliseconds.
  • It occurs both when the macro is being controlled with the mouse cursor and when using a (learned) midi controller, but NOT with host automation of the macros.

Reaper is saving plugin states every time you change a parameter. When the Redux patch gets bigger this can be a bit annoying.

But there’s an option in Reaper for that:

In Reaper’s FX list - plugin browser - before adding Redux, right click on Redux and select:
Compatibility Settings → Enable Minimal Undo States

This will enable the Minimal Undo States option for Redux only. There’s a global option in Reaper preferences too which applies to all plugins.

That was it.

Problem solved. Thanks!
