Renoise 3.5 on Windows 7/8

Fully working, but not excessively tested though.
VxKex just kicks ass.

Did you patched it by yourself?

No, it is not an exe hack, it is just kernel extensions for missing functions.

since i am not goin’ into 10 or something this is an important software to keep most programs updated:

Hope that announced cpu optimizations will help my 7950x to run Renoise even faster.

Thank you, this also can be done by exe patching by renaming library names with lack of functions to some alternatives. I didn’t know for this project. Looks like they implement smarter way by pointing windows loader what library to load.

I think that pointing could be done by software developers themselves but some of them seem too lazy to put one more compatibility layer in your days. Rather sad situation overall, bad practices copied from evil Apple.

Windows Vista taskbar <3 I had my Win7 themed like that as well

v3.5.3 works fine

However everything above >= 3.5.0 is not working on Windows 8.1, even with VxKex Next. Quite weird…

Yes very sad!

Under win7 i was on 11 ms latency without problem. On win10 and Win11 i dont get under 31 ms latency without crackling. But as a dev, you are under a forcing ecosystem of Librarys often, as like some webframeworks forcing you to upgrading your browser. Sad, but reality.

It was simpler than i thought. I’ve planned to mess around with CFF Explorer to change major and minor versions of the OS requirements. But solution was to just unpack installer with innoextract - A tool to unpack installers created by Inno Setup

innoextract.exe renoise.exe

It will unpack application to the App folder.

And now it doesn’t even require kernel extender and kick-starting in native 8.1 mode.

It’s required bump since improved multi-core performance in this update.

and yeah i am not going to win10 path in any case, because of how badly os is written. Recently i tested Optane p5800x drive and it’s latency was minimal on Windows 7, and atrociously bad on Windows 10

Also DPC in win10 is in bad shape too, so all-in-all it is a piece of crap. I don’t even mentioning win11. You can extrapolate the level of shitiness by yourself.

THIS ! made my day!!
Renoise 3.5.4 now runs on my Win8.1 Laptop - again.
although in the meantime I am very used to linux, I’m grateful for an alternative

thankyou spacedrone808 for this hint

No problemo, enjoy i’ll keep thread updated

So 3.5 don’t usually run on windows 7/8 in normality?… Needs hacks/help?… Then that’s crappy…

Impressive would be to see it run on Windows 98 or 95…

Windows 7 ESU runs Renoise 3.5 with the help of VxKex Next, Windows 8.1 runs it natively, but you need to unclock installer by means of unpacking it (see instruction above).
As for Win9x, it is just way too old to handle modern stuff.
