basically, i really love the way renoise handles sampling. a lot of times i find myself creating oscillator waveforms out of complex samples just using the sample loop capabilities and effects. I found this extremely inspirational for bass and lead sounds… I think renoise development could maybe extend the fature list in the sample instrument section, so we could have something that really is a synth engine using wav as it’s oscillator source. maybe some wavetable possibilities.
i also wonder if it is possible to export my instruments (at least the samples with the loop points). cause i’d like to make soundfonts out of the instruments i’ve created over time. this way i could use the soundfonts in my hardware gear etc.
i never used samples this way before renoise. i found i can make sounds very hard or impossible to accomplish with classic subtractive synthesis.

i’ve been using renoise as a pseudosynth for ages, and i see it as a modular wavetable synth, only you’re not limited to the native fx like you would with a regular vst synth.
i dont even have a vst synth in my system.
i would love more development in the synth direction, but in a strange way, by not developing a proper synth, the devs have given us what i would say is one of the most flexible modular platforms from which to design sound.

I’ve made what I think is quite a nice sounding mono-synth using the key trackers and afew ring mods; give it a go!

i´ve just started with using renoise and only that for synth sounds…impressive…got some decent basses in a minute using the chip cycle waves & devices; one square, one saw, add some dist > send it to a bus, some gimmicks + a scream filter…lfo on the cutoff, few automations…endless possibilities, imo!
would there be a benefit in creating sum waveform device e.g. or is using singlecycle waveforms maybe even more effective?

heres what to
you can use a waveform or whatever sample or you can use none (effectively); draw a 1 sample long looping sample with it’s amplitude just below half. The volume envelope of this/these instrument = volume envelope of the synth.
The first XY devce controls the balance of the harmonic oscillators (ring mod (1) ring mod (2). hydra controls portamento(inertia) on all oscilators (change the slopes for interesting effect) the second XY controls the phase of the two last oscillators (meh).
You need to make that sample to provide an amplitude offset so the ring mods work.
Add to this by making more harmonics please
please add to this/change the filter settings blah blah. This is the basic starting point. Save more keytracker harmonic presets so you can switch quickly. OR use hydra and save the hydra presets. Add effects/ keytrack the filters etc etc hydra the wave type. detune the key trackers a little etc etc…
I haven’t had time yet but you could do additive synthesis by exploding this concept onto multiple send tracks.

Probably need to wait till I’m sober, but I’m not getting that spectacular sounds out of it . I like the inertia thing with the hydra, but the ringmods add unpleasant dirt in most xy settings (imo). Need to experiment more.

Yeah, obviously this is only a proof of concept thing. Add to it. I just wanted to show how key track controls the freq of the ring mod really. Less dirt? use different waveforms!
I just made a nicer sounding additive synth but need to save as a song. Shame we can’t attach songs.

what would be nice is a spectrum editor for single cycle waveforms. you can’t draw that kind of shit easily and it sounds great!
and multiple loop points so you can make a wave table synth out of a bunch of single cycle waves.
