Hello! It’s crazy! Native linux version of renoize using more CPU and his GUI is very-very slowly (I tested it on kubuntu and xubuntu)! Horizontally scrolling on tracks when playing — it’s very(x10) slowly! But when I using Windows version of Renoise via Wine — all ok! I think it’s a big bug! Maybe GUI-drawing not optimized, it’s not cool. I wanna to buy Renoise for using on linux, but it’s stopped me, it’s funny bug!
try also lowering the framerate in the preferences
this is certainly not a bug in Renoise since you seem to be the only one with this problem; more likely a problem with your video adapter Linux drivers
Yes, well this is unfortunately a problem mainly addressed to Linux (and most likely the X11 environment handling 3D graphics) and hardly Renoise.
You might be able to regain some CPU space by crippling down the fancy stuff in Linux and prioritise the Renoise thread, though the method described there is generic and may be different on various linux distributions from the one described on that FAQ page.
The lack of native VST plugins on Linux and lack of support for LV2 plugins are also holding off a lot of people to register Renoise.
To sum it up: The professional audio platforms currently still are Windows and Mac (for the larger versatility of features), there are some Linux distributions around designed and compiled for this specific audio processing software, still X11 is not rendering the GUI frameworks that the Renoise GUI is based on optimally.
Wait-wait-wait! Problem in Linux? But see: I starting Renoize on Wine, on Linux, Wine — is a windows emulator for linux, Wine — is a transformer WinAPI to native X11, and all nice! How it can possible? Maybe if I get you video how I doing this — it becomes clear — problem in Renoize native linux port.
this is all very much dependant on the distro you use. anything *buntu is not known for its efficiency or lightness in particular (even though Xubuntu uses Xfce, it still manages to be somewhat bloated). try out another distro and see how that works? i run Aptosid with Openbox and do not have the issues you describe.
Which sound system are you using in Linux applications by default, and which one does WINE use by default?
I’m not even sure that is the issue, but there must be something that the native application uses (by default of the OS, probably) that makes it choke, which WINE does not and thus runs better.
I’m tryed using Renoize on Openbox too, horizontally scrolling all the same still slow.

My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6-3090er Entertainment
AMD Phenom™ II P920 Quad-Core Processor
Chiset: AMD RS880M
RAM: 4096 DDR-3
HD: SATA HD 7200
Video: Two cards for energy economy and high acceleration:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1024 Мб GDDR3
ATI 4250 + ATI 5650
I don’t know if a dual video card really enhances the performance here specially because you are not using equally specified gpu’s.
It could be that Wine is not designed to address two video cards simultaneously this way, hence Renoise (or any other particular game or X11 app) runs better in Wine.
Have tried running other 3D X11 applications and games and see if they are running smoothly with that setup?
You don’t need to feel forced to buy Renoise at all btw, but your situation is simply not common and perhaps not easy fix if it really is a Renoise problem, but i highly doubt that in this case.
@unclechu: Openbox isn’t really that much lighter than Xfce, and it seems indeed that the lightness of your setup might not be the issue. since you say you experience the lagging in GUI only (right? no audio lag?), this suggests it is an issue with your graphics setup. which driver are you using for the ATI card? (ATI is notoriously crappy on Linux and drivers might make a huge difference here)
^ good job testing all the options!
i remember having GUI lags on Linux with Renoise, and taktik explained it because of my Jack settings that had a really high latency or something. not sure. cannot seem to locate the thread. sadly, this is all the info i got for you from here on out. i am not a Linux guru so cannot help you further, and very sorry for it. hope you solve your issue in the end, and at least you can still work through Wine :S
I also have the problem of Renoise GUI not working well in Linux, and i’ve tried open source driver and my current driver is the latest proprietary ATI. Every other program I’ve tried runs smoothly.
System specs:
❯ uname -a
Linux maui-wowie 3.2.0-35-lowlatency #34-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 18 18:12:15 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Could you guys also post a snippet from your Renoise logs, so we can see your audio settings?
A lag as shown here in the video watch?v=P8yUFbuSM_c of course is not how Renoise usually runs natively in Renoise.
Have you also tried if disabling/enabling desktop effects, compiz and stuff makes a difference on your setups?
Running xfce 4.10 here, both with and without compositing. I haven’t used the windows version extensively, but both versions seem to run about the same. In the linux version, sometimes when my sound card settings aren’t optimal, the VU bars and scopes become all sluggish, but the rest of the interface responds normally.
