Renoise's maximizer is just wonderful!

Thanks to the Renoise team for this great plugin!

I just realized how easy I can now add some nice punch to the beats without fiddling around with compressor, sidechain or such stuff! I just have to say wow! Easy, powerful and simple to understand!

One question remains for me: I would like to eliminate even the smallest amount of transients in a snaredrum. The maximizer seems to add a little more transients since the attack takes some milliseconds at least.

Would a addition of a lookahead parameter for the maximizer solve this problem or is it already possible? I tried to add a gate after the maximizer to smooth the attack, but the gate seems a little bit too imprecise.

If you need to do such precise shaping of the transient, then I would probably say to attack (heh) the problem at the source: Tweak the sample and its modulations directly.

If you simply want to reduce some of the energy from the attack, then a simple volume fader applied to the first 10-15ms (or so) will let you precisely control the shape of the transient hit. You can tweak the ‘From’ parameter to have more or less of an effect.

Oh thanks, that’s a good idea. I will try it.

Or if you are using VST or want to control it in the DSP chain you can use the Amp Envelope preset in the doofer. Works nicely in a lot of one shot scenarios. Triggered by each note, with a free LFO envelope controlling a gainer.

That preset is my mini but proud addition to 3.0

Kool thing, using it right now. But isn’t that envelope more appropriate for shaping the tail ? If I want to shape the attack of a sample, I’d have to cut out the attack-phase, for instance with a transient shaper, or am I wrong ?

You can use the envelope like an ADSR envelope. If you want to reduce the attack/ initial transient in a sound you just pull down the first node. You can then adjust the second node left and right to change the curve, if you want to get more creative, you can add more points and change the speed of the envelope by adjusting the "Env Speed " parameter. You can of course use other methods like a transient shaper in conjunction if it helps you get the sound you are after.

Here with the Amp Envelope I can reduce a kick pretty much down to it`s initial transient - the click, or eliminate the click and be left with the boom of the tail.

Or just put a compressor in front of the maximiser.

Thanks, I prefer dblue’s one since it’s the most precise one. Will also try ledger’s suggestion for shaping transients of VSTs.
