I almost feel ashamed for asking after 15 years of renoise usage .
But is there a way to insert ( replace ) a note without replacing the velocity value ?
you’re playing with a midi controller keyboard or a computer keyboard? With a computer keyboard I don’t experience this, with a midi controller you might need to disable the velocity option in the midi preferences?

Over here , the note velocity is always overwritten
You probably have put a value in this box, top of the main gui;
edit; make it look like in the screenshot, should fix it I think.

I wasn’t even aware of the button next to the velocity value slider .
