These type of posts/requests pop up every once in a while and I think the current stance is not to concentrate on backwards compatibility with the tracker legacy of old, but concentrate on funky new Renoise functionality.
Maybe there are other trackers in which you can open the format, than render the samples and import them back in Renoise?
Unfortunate but true.
You can try to load them in Impulse Tracker, save them as *.IT and import them in renoise. But don’t be surprised if you miss some song/fx data.
I think the step s3m->IT is quite good. Maybe its an idea to make an external IT->XRNS converter tool to do better conversion…(but thats quite a lot of pain for a dead-fileformat)
It might be doable but indeed painful: you will have to do pitch envelope conversion in two steps to get things right and hoping not to use over 2 or three octaves for the particular instrument.
IT pitch envelope supports 3200 cents in range while Renoise only supports 2400 cents.
Do the math.
