Sending Midi Note Information From Renoise(rewire)

Helo,

I am having trouble figuring out how to recieve midi information from renoise( i’m using renoise as slave). I am running ableton live as my master, and i have no problem getting audio from renoise - as i make an audio track i have the option to choose renoise as my audio input and then the channel, but when i make a midi track i haave no such option.

Is ther any way to solve this?

thank you,

pfke

First thing: are you sure that you can actually output midi in Renoise while it’s a slave? It used to be a limitation of Rewire that only the Master app could capture the midi drivers. I don’t know if that is still the case, though.

Second: Rewire is a protocol for allowing audio and sync information to travel between apps, I don’t know that midi notes can travel over those channels. That being said, if the above isn’t true it might be possible for Renoise to send midi to some intermediate destination (either a midi interface or a virtual interface a la MidiYoke) as a proxy that Ableton can receive midi from.

Question: what is the point of this exercise? Is it because you want to sequence a Live instrument in Renoise? With that exception of that specific example, it seems like it would be just as easy to put the instrument in Renoise, sequence it there, and then bounce to disk and either play it back as a sample-based instrument (which Ableton can hear through Rewire) or just import it as a wav into Ableton…

Renoise does not really support MIDI as a slave:no instrument control through midi and currently no possibility to send notes either but perhaps the last case might change a bit sooner than the instrument support.
This is still investigated.

Thanks

I could find the note send useful.

Certainly, controlling / automating renoise’ FX in other apps would be useful as well, but that raises the question: at what extent could you use renoise’ FX? Would it be possible to use renoise’ fx on master apps audio? The only way that i could think of this , when running rewire, is: send audio from master to renoise , then tweak it inside of renoise and send it back to master. It would be handy - to tweak master apps audio with renoise’ fx in real time, it would definitely speed things up, and thus giving more room for creativity :)

FAFAIK the ReWire Protocol, it was meant to transfer slave-audio to the master only, not returning back audio to the slave.
Only sending midi data to the slave could be possible, but the master controls everything.
If you make Renoise the master, you can do whatever you desire regarding midi control, if the slave supports this ofcourse…

It would be nice if ReWire allows cross-patching between slaves and masters.
In that way Jack Transport works a lot more convenient.

Thank you for the help n’ info!

Cheers,

Renoise is now Rewire enabled with v2.1!
