Sidechaining: Routing Device vs. Signal Follower

Hi Renoise community,

I was wondering what the difference is between sidechaining using the *Signal Follower meta device (like in “Tutorial - Ducking (Sidechaining)”), or the #Sidechain routing device for sidechain compression?

Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn’t find anywhere that explains the difference and why you would use one over the other. It’s confusing to me that there’s a routing device called #Sidechain, but the tutorial for sidechaining doesn’t use or mention it at all.

Thanks for your time,
chunch

In this example, using a sidechain would make more sense. When this tutorial was written, there was no sidechain device.

In general, a Signal Follower can be connected to anything. For example, you can connect it to a filter cutoff value or whatever else. The sidechain device can only be connected to devices with explicit sidechain support.
