where can I find the control to switch to the next pattern immediately when I select it? rather than waiting for it to reach the end of the current pattern before it switches?
When you select it where? If you’re talking about when you click on the [>] play button next to each pattern in the Pattern Sequencer, then you can also double-click this to do an immediate jump. Read the manual page I just linked to for more tips.
