I’ve been using the Convolver a lot in the last couple days and there seems to be a problem when using long IR files. I get crackles and a significant increase in cpu-load for any file longer than ca. 15 seconds.
The increase in cpu-load seems logical (maybe not in that extent), but the crackles are really annoying.
granted, this is an extremely long IR and pretty much an exeption, but files like these work fine in other Convolving reverbs i use (the SIR2 and Abletons Convolver Pro).
so is there a maximum length of files that can be used flawlessly in Convolver? Is this a bug?
Do you have a problem with it when you render-down?
(I’m using 64-bit Renoise, 3.0.0b8 on Arch Linux - Core i5 i5-4670Km 16 gigs of ram BUT I have a ton of other stuff running in the background, using much of my memory).
will try the rendering and report back. doesn’t really make much sense to me though - if i can’t even hear the reverb because of the crackles i wouldn’t use it in a track anyhow. thankfully it’s just a bunch of IRs misbehaving.
i’m on windows 7 64Bit (using the 32Bit version of Renoise though)
Renoise 3 is installed in Beta 8 atm
processor is rather oldish, a dual-core 2.3GHz
i realized it gets better when i increase ASIO buffer size but some (very few) IRs still won’t work correctly.
still buggers me though. as mentioned before i have no troubles at all with other convolving reverbs.
So - I have a similar experience. Works great on my fairly-fast Core i5 Linux system, 64 bit.
Same IR file on my Windows XP, Older Athlon X2 4200+ - 32 bit? Noisy, glitchy, on longer IR files.
Increasing the ASIO buffer size resolves the issue. You should definitely take a look at CPU usage, though.
I do think it’s interesting you have good luck with other colvolvers and not with this - it does mean maybe there are some performance issues with the Renoise convolver.
But, honestly, I’m not surprised meynearly-10-year-old XP workstation doesn’t have a lot of luck with these longer impulse files. In fact, posting this message is the last thing I’m doing on it before I swap out the motherboard with a new(used) Core 2 Quad one. =]
