Sound Forge for beat slicing/processing

Dear Friends,
after reading here and there on the forum about it, I wanted to try Sound Forge Audio Studio 12.5 to process beats, and do some mangling/slicing/rearranging.

I’m getting mad for I’ve read here on this forum that a few fellow Renoise users do employ SF to manipulate breaks and then throw them in our favourite tracker and manipulate them further with Sxx effect.

I’ve been trying to learn something about it, both by reading the manual, both by searching tutorial vids on YT.

But there’s is something that I absolutely don’t get.

Though I’ve learned how to slice samples, I’m having really a hard time to figure out how to rearrange them, also because the visual space you have just covers the whole sample you put in and you can’t zoom out any further.

As for the “open and append” function, things are not improving much, I really feel claustrophobic.

Yet, I’m sure this is a great software and I can see there are some very good and advanced features that, fair enough, are not present in our beloved tracker.

So I would be very grateful if somebody can provide some help.

I hope this is not considered OT and yes, I can see this is not a SF forum

Thank you soooo much

Simone

In Renoise you can cut any sample out into a new instrument so if you find it hard to use the sample commands do that and see where it takes you.I personally don’t use the sample commands either and I am missing a lot for sure I know.

hey, thanx for the reply

No, actually I’m quite at ease with both the Sxx command and the slicing/drumkit thing. Is that I wanted to try and see whether I manage to use an external wave editor to do some advancend fx processing/slicing. But nope, so far I can’t just figure it out.

i dont understand what are you trying to accomplish, give us an example

basically, I just wanna know is somebody in here has successfully used SoundForge to slice, mangle and rearrange/process breaks… I simply can’t figure out it.

I mean : I can slice the beats/breaks, I can export them… but then, how do I rearrange them? Is it possible within SoundForge?

Thanks,

S

One thing I can say, I legally own SF 12 but I mostly use SF 6, because the program became bloated as soon as Sony bought Sonic Foundry out. I find SF 6 to be nice and clean and easy to use.

Something else you could try is Wavosaur… It sounds stupid but it’s nearly a 1:1 remake of SF 6 and I love it too

Hey, thank you for answering. Yes, I think it’s too expensive for what you get, and it’s absolutely not friendly nor intuitive.

I’ve downloaded Wavosaur, it looks nice and easy, I just wonder if a free software can be as good… you write “nearly a 1:1 remake”… can you explain it a bit? I mean, what do you think you’re missing from SF?

Bye,

S

I haven’t used it in a while, so I’m not entirely sure honestly. Let’s just say if I didn’t own Soundforge then I would just stick with Wavosaur, I definitely like it better than Audacity as far as free audio editing software goes. Less is more if you ask me, Wavosaur and Soundforge 6 have everything I need as far as doing wave-surgery is concerned.

I’ll agree with you, my friend. Creativity is the essential tool, a lot of great music from the past was made with stone age technology if compared to what we have today. I just read that SF was very good for accurate and quick changes when applying effects and plug ins, do you confirm that? And can you do a similar thing in Wavosaur? Thanks for your reply anyway

Yep, exactly! Soundforge is to the point. And Wavosaur is basically Soundforge re-created by somebody who loved Soundforge too.

There’s really no obvious difference between Soundforge 6 and Wavosaur that I can see, but like i said I haven’t used Wavosaur in a while. I’ll have to start using it again just to see if I can spot anything different. When I load Soundforge 6 or Wavosaur it’s instant. When I load Soundforge 12 there is a big delay, and you can tell it’s checking my license with a server…So annoying, as a paying customer I get jerked around like that. Sometimes it pops a promotion in my face when I open it too.

(Sorry, to answer your question… Yes, applying FX is quick and you can do it in either program.)

bahahhahahahhahhhhahahha! You’re absolutely right… I’ll dive into Wavosaur a bit and I’ll let you know. Thanks <3
