Studio Monitors

Thanks for the info, I always enjoy a good story.
Looks like those are what I will go for.

Now for something slightly tangent.
I would like to eventually run a complimentary sub, and I am going to buy a new soundcard at the same time as the monitors.

Maybe this is a total noob question, but if I pickup the m-audio 2496, will I have enough outputs to run a sub in addition to the monitors?

i think you will most likely connect your monitors through the sub
or some sort of external crossover. its not good idea to connect separately monitors and sub as they will struggle for low frequencies together

Sorry for going off on one quite so much last night, I had been at work for 16 hours straight and my brain was starting to turn into marshmellow. Glad you found my blurb interesting anyway.

Second that!
Just like me and my lovely M1Mk2. A true love story B)

I also bought a pair of Monitor Ones, MK2 (passive). They are quite good overall. Don’t have that typical monitorish sound with strong upper mids. Very listenable, good detail and imaging.

They are maybe a bit bassy, (at least compared to my small Yamaha MSP5As) and have a very strong(much too strong!) bass at 40Hz (38-42), which is most probably caused by my room’s fundamental freq.
Can someone confirm this? Sqeetz?

The build quality is terrible, tho! I had to (re)screw the woofer in and reglue the gum ring. It probably fell out during transport.

I’m thinking about getting some studio monitors additionally. Any recommendations?
There are no limits in terms of the price, but of course overpriced stuff is out of the question. And the sound should be as neutral as possible. Which are the best?

Edit:
Due to this article I might buy the Genelec 8000 (Genelec 8020 to be precise), but I have to think about it. 359 € for each speaker or 718 € for a pair of speakers isn’t that cheap for an addition. But on the other hand I want to buy studio monitors once in a lifetime, if I’m really going to buy it. Here’s the best commercial for speakers I’ve seen so far:

“Fluid audio” or “Genelec” brand ?

https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/arc3/

I’ll get ADAM speakers myself next time, think I’ll choose T7V

This is an investment

costly

But no regrets later

2X Fluid Audio FX80 – Musikhaus Thomann

AND

RME DACs are the best

But Genelec Monitors are an excellent choice
if you already have a good DAC

You will have the result of the weakest part of the chain

DAC IS VERY IMPORTANT

With good monitors, you will have a good mastering solution
With a good DAC,you will have “Wolf ears”

You can try a RME DAC

After some research I think I will have to go with Genelec 8030 CP (518 € per speaker):

Neumann KH120 A seems to be equal (659 € per speaker), there a people who even prefer these:

@Garf:
Not too pricey and everythings seems to be fine. I just saw a review from a sound engineer comparing ADAM speakers from the award winning AX series with Genelecs from the 8000 series. He literally said that the Genelecs “wipe the floor” with the ADAMs. BUT your going for the T series (186 € per speaker) and 2 speakers of ADAM Audio T7V are way cheaper than 1 single speaker of Genelec 8030, and they’re the same category. So if the T7Vs are as good as expected, the price/performance-ratio must be absolutely outstanding. On the other hand that’s exactly what’s been said about the Genelec 8000 series. Not an easy decision. I think if I buy monitors I will have to go with the “goat”, even if it’s a little bit pricey, and that obviously are the Genelecs. But please tell me how the ADAMs changed your flow while mixing when you got them.

I love how a 15 year old thread can just get revived like this!

I just thought I would chime in about the Adam T7V: they look great, they sound very clear and on paper the frequency response is great. That ribbon tweeter is great for high frequencies. After hearing them in person, I found them to lack low end, even though supposedly they go down to 39Hz. I really wanted to like these monitors, but was disappointed, especially considering the price tag. This is probably subjective, but make sure to listen to your favorite reference track in person before buying!

The T7V is their cheapest series so not in the same category as yours but he probably mean across the board, anyway ADAM Audio also have AX and S series both much more expensive and obviously better. I’ve watched many Youtube reviews of their T and AX series speakers and they have all been positive.

Well I’ll be damned, two negatives in a row, yes I wanted that model because it sounds perfect on paper and reviews actually praise them and I want the 7” woofer version because of the 39Hz as my kicks can be around 50hz so a little buffer to about 40Hz would be nice. Did you find another speaker?

speakers are subjective tho, sound engineers have different opinion so just look through as many reviews as possible and as lowph listen to them in person if possible.

What I did not like in general about the typical Adam’s tweeters: I couldn’t hear any resonance peaks at the highs, which made finetuning in this area on it impossible. I don’t have this problem with the usual tweeter type. Also it is filled with hightech electronics like DSP processing inside, I think I prefer a more simple design which does not require such processing.

Dynaudio are killer (got the Lyd5 myself) but the BM5 have a lot of praises as well. This is the best monitors I ever had. Perfect for a small studio : the basses are limited but clear as all hell, and the highs are just perfect.

I’ve had a LOT of monitors of all prices and sizes and the lyd5 are the first one I never think about or get distracted by.

Still searching for the right monitors for me. For now using KRK Rokit 8, which have plenty of low end, but are far from “flat”. It’s fine for now, because my walls are treated and that almost makes more of a difference than the actual speakers in my opinion. With the pandemic it’s harder to go listen to new stuff in person.

That’s right, there’s no chance of testing speakers in person. There’s corona and there’s no time. I count on the information I get online, and if the speakers suck I will send them back and get my money back. That’s how you do it online, right?

They have the same size and are made for the same purpose and the same room size, that’s what I meant with “same category”.

Interesting. All the reviews I’ve read so far are saying the opposite, which means the bass is too heavy for being studio monitors.

Thanks for the tip! Do you also had some Genelecs? The Genelec 8030 CPs seem to be the perfect ones for me. The Lyd5 seems to be good, too, but I’m not sure if it would be as good as the Genelecs. Is there also another version in a different color? White doesn’t fit to all my other stuff, and as a designer I’m always also looking at the optics. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi, did you buy them
 thinking about the same choice.

Not yet, it’s going to take awhile actually as I have to move first.

Adams are really good in my experience. I have KRK Rokits which are nice but very bass heavy
