Suggestion: New Forum

We have a little debate in the background about revising the current song-database and connecting the board accounts to it.
If you would post a song into the database a forum message would be automatically generated…
But for many other reasons the current song database is being planned to be revised:more search capabilities, better checks upon dead links, more possibilities to allow links to external hosting archives (which gives you enough space to promote either your commercial origin or private origin).
There is currently no better timing but to discuss this right now.

spam is spam is spam is spam is spam…

I like the idea of a samples/instruments board a lot more,
if people are going to share them, ofcourse… which I will!!
It seems a lot more practical than just another board for
MORE spam.

An abandoned song forum would also be useful… there are many times I’d like to give away some tracks that I was going nowhere with… though sometimes I just make them sample fodder… but it kinda goes along the same idea as an open collaboration. I think alot of Renoise users have a hard time collaborating with users of different sequencers, so why not get some community collaboration happening?

Also, I’m not sure how I’d like the song section linked to the song forum as much… if it was implemented, I’d still like to see different subforums arise… I really do see the need to make very well defined barriers between these types of spam… each has a very different purpose, and I honestly think that album releases deserve more respect than song releases, which in turn deserve more attention than preview spam. And if they don’t deserve different levels of respect, they still very much deserve to be separate entities on the boards… mostly due to the difference in turnover rates. Album releases are rare compared to song previews… and fully mastered song releases often get lost in the sea of variously staged song previews.

THis is a very good suggestion, I don’t think we need another forum, but a new forum section, the album one… of course it would much less active, but the topics in it would be big ones.

edit: ohhh that kind of new forum… oh well… I guess byte’s idea is still better, a commercial release is pretty much always an ep or lp, not a separate song, if it’s only one song and it’s commercial, I guess it’s just like a very small ep, which could be included in the “album” section.

I’m not sure the distinction should be made between commercial and noncommercial… just between album/song/preview

But then, I just kinda hijacked this thread :P

Byte I think your ideas are best.

The old song section is a very 90s tracker way of going about sharing songs. We just don’t NEED another CTG or TiS. Let’s follow BYTE’s suggestions. Moderated forums by community elders. And a little more ability to have some extra features like html.

user pages!?

as for this discussion.
i dunno why i think this but, to me promoting your commercial music on here. seems strange.

like it’s actually taking away from the commercial aspect of what your up to. something along the lines of trying to sell to sellers, instead of selling to buyers.
i do however understand the idea of supporting fellow renoise artists, it just seem wrong side up.

Valid point. Where are the buyers though?

Well, this IS a community, and not an online store.

Also, I’ve hesitated to post a lot of my songs, since they are perhaps 50% Renoise, the rest being all manner and sorts of left-field assembly.
IMHO being professional artist implies that you don’t care about the tools - you just happen to master them. But I know a lot of people here would appreciate xrns the most no matter what.

I’m sure that I am not the only one with that particular view on a “commercial” song forum, even if I spread the good word (Renoise) wherever I go -

great question.
as i’ve been thinking about this question for the last hour & a half.

what i can come up with is.
i don’t think they are here on the web!

as i see most listen to streams,
and if it’s on last.fm, myspace…etc it’s more than likely already archived on rapidshare & harddrives.

normal people that could be potential buyers don’t see the web as a bunch of people with honest faces doing things for them.
they see unlimited spam & the quickest way to close the pop-up advert without ever looking at it.
not even realizing they just installed something.

so by the time they hear about limewires, torrents, ngs, rapidshares.
their already Well disturbed.

seems getting money on any type of digital media on the web is truly only reserved for those that can influence some type of mob appeal.

i do see a lot of artists that don’t want to be genre classified, catagorized, in everything.
yet, it’s the only possible way 95% of them could ever be seen.

You assess it well Choice. It’s indeed tricky times.

I’ve had offers to me to start netlabels, and it’s hard not to greet it with the same cynicism. Any effort in pulling that off successfully would need to focus on physical markets, not internet ones. Commercialism is for the bold.

So my point here is not to do with commercialism. My point is simply that of organisation - pool decent and rich music into an appropriate center. Perhaps this isn’t the job of Renoise, and perhaps we shall take this matter into our own hands…

saw a recent /. article. making me think the best plausible idea for a forum such as this is the make it private and invite videogame designers.

Now we’re talking! There’s a strong tradition for using trackers with videogames, and even if we in recent years have seen games have a full mp3 soundtrack (GTA, Fifa etc.), there will always be a huge demand for dynamic scores (you know, where events control the music, such as suspense music that start when entering a room).

Question: Have the Renoise playback engine ever been licensed to a game?

I personally despise it when people post XRNS without posting a rendered mp3 … simply because there is no standalone XRNS player… so I’m often burdened by having to open Renoise at work… something I don’t like doing. I’d rather just copy and paste the mp3 url into xmplay… listen to the song… give my feedback… and be done with it.

btw, to the admins… nice emote edit: :drummer:

:P

Also, who really wants to spam their songs or albums on a private board? That seems a bit silly to me.

Do you think [DOS/work] is more amusing than music?

Rome was not built in one day. Quit really?

B) Anybody remember more FT quotes?

Renoise Exclusive! :P

Thanks! This is the one that seemed appropriate for Byte’s statement:

 • For Work and Worry, press YES. For Delectation and Demos, press NO. : [Yes] [No]
