Sync Lfo Start To Pattern Start

Is there really such a big difference? Haven’t had time yet to play with this build, but I like to hear from the devs if something changed or most likely you guys are tripping :)

+1!

All it needs now is threshold based beat detection :P

I’m just back from a short vacation. when I used the preview version of beta8 I also noticed a performance improvement. happy to see that it’s a general feeling.

OK, I grabbed some random pattern and rendered it to .wav in 1.8 and 1.9b8. I don’t know how the renderer works, if it’s dependent upon the audio engine or not (= is what your hear the same as what you get?). Nevertheless, when I compared the two clips in Har-Bal, I see that there actually is a difference between the two.

Below you see the techno1.wav (rendered from 1.8) in the brighter yellow color, and techno2.wav (rendered from 1.9b8) in the darker yellow color:

1.8: http://www.sendspace.com/file/05urhf
1.9b8: http://www.sendspace.com/file/lg48x5

Maybe it’s just a psycho-acoustic effect. Anyway, I hope that this nice audio in the b8 version will still be there in the final 1.9 version.

I also did a test. I used b7 and b8 for comparison, and did render (sinc/cubic) as well as recording live output in 32 bit.

Results are located here, along the RNS file I used for testing.

The spectral view reveal no difference at all. The sound is the same in b7 and b8!

Edit: removed the pictures

Maybe it’s some VSTs that are working better with b8?

Anyway: yay for Renoise getting faster all the time haha!

danoise : load both clips in audition. for one go to “effects” and choose “invert” (top of the list). then copy the clip, go to the other and press ctrl-shift-V (Mix Paste) and use “Overlap/Mix”. The resulting Audio shows the difference between both audioclips, if there is only silence then there is no difference.

No difference (completely blank screen) with mix paste. They are the same.

I still haven’t tried the latest beta myself, but how comes that so many are experiencing this (seemable) placebo-effect?

Well, no DSP changes have been made for 1.9 b8, so this is either a placebo effect, the compiler had a good day, or the code starts to complete and fix itself.

But one thing: When comparing rendered results (b8 against b7 in this case), and they are different, first try to render twice with the same version (b8) and compare them. Random LFO or other stuff may sound different on every playback. Should happen in Renoise only when using random LFO Devicess or LFOs which are not manually synced. In VST synths this will quite often happen…

could dithering cause minimal differences in the waves also?

Interesting indeed- I have same kind of expreriences here. b8 sounds better. :)

Anyway, great job guys!!! I am new here, I have a long background using Protracker etc… I’ve used Renoise now about one year, and it rocks. Best tracker ever and it is going to be even better all the time. Keep on the great job. Wonderful.

So, should we call Mulder or Scully?

i am a mastering engineer so i should really be able to tell if there is any difference. based on Transcender’s samples i didn’t hear any notable difference at all, but then again i went to rave last night for 10 hours and drank a bottle of whiskey, therefore i may aswell be wearing earmuffs right now… good job im having tomorrow off!

:P

I can’t hear any notable difference on those random samples either, but maybe this is due to the renderer. When I playback the audio in 1.8 and 1.9b8 the former sounds slightly more muddy and the latter a little clearer. There must be a rational explanation why. Maybe it’s not even Renoise related. Maybe it’s something I just installed that affected the sound card drivers or otherwise improved overall performance on my system?

But since I can’t prove this asserted “improvement in audio qulity” by objective means (taktik already pointed out that VST LFO’s etc that might contribute to differences), I will conclude that there is no audio quality improvement. This is just an interesting placebo effect. But it’s cool that a few others in this thread share that placebo.
B)

EDIT: This morning, the magic in Renoise 1.9b8 went away. The same songs that yesterday were loaded very fast now took quite a while to load. And the high audio quality also disappeared, now it’s more muddy again. This surely must be because of something in my computer system.
:(

I hate it when my cpu gets used… that’s why I run a barebones linux kernel with only vi installed…

smacks his forhead

When using custom mode, positions do not exactly match Dblue’s description, Dblue only described the reset of the fixed sine/saw waves using offset 50%.
The LFO is a little more complex than just that.

/me bows down to vincent, the gif-master :)

God damn guys. This really clears up a lot of issues for me.

Thank you so much for your illustrations and anims.
