synth -> Renoise LINE IN, latency issue

Hi, I’m having a strange issue that I think can be worked out somehow.

My DAW is a Presonus Firebox that goes to my MacbookPro via firewire. I have it setup such that I can play my external hard synth and the real audio goes to the DAW and then into a Renoise track via LINE IN DSP plugin.

There is no real latency issue for 5 minutes [not a precise measurement], then all of a sudden there will be a consistent latency… If synth is playing in this moment, I will hear a bunch of garbling for a couple seconds as the latency gets introduced… If I re-init the audio device via Renoise preferences, the latency disappears for another couple-several minutes… it’s a vicious cycle that I would like to eliminate from my creative process. Any tips?

I’m currently using MIDI Return MODE on the LINE IN DSP plugin, I will try the other one see if it fixes anything [doubt it] EDIT: just tried Live Recording setting and it didn’t help; the situation remains the same.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I cannot tell if this is a problem with DAW or Renoise… btw Macbook has 8 GB RAM and 2.53 Ghz Core2Duo

I’m guessing you’re using too much cpu? I’ve experienced myself that the cpu sometimes slowly increases more and more and starts choking in a while, and when i re-init the audio driver (or stop the song and whait untill the cpu has lowered) it works fine for a while again.

I guess it depends on the effects you’re using, but i haven’t found out what’s causing it. I had the convolver as my main suspect for a while, but i’m really not shure, there might be several reasons or simply just too much going on at the same time.

I think it’s a bit strange though, once i had a short track (probably 30sec. or something) looping for a few minutes, slowly the cpu increases untill it gets to high to play it any longer. Could it be a bug?

However, for me, if that lag has begun, even after the song has ended and nothing else is going on… there will always be a lag until I reinit

but I have no idea what it might be… Either the interface, the medium of the interface, or the CPU?? Something else perhaps?

This is REALLY ANNOYING tho and it chokes my creativity :[ Somebody with a solution?

To stop a track properly you have to push the stop button twice. If you only push it once the effects and stuff won’t stop. So try pushing it twice and wait for a while and see if you get the same behaviour.

I think upgrading/optimizing your hardware or drivers is the only solution. Maybe tweaking the bitrates/sample rates/buffer/latency is all you need? Maybe using another audio driver if available, ASIO/Directsound?

Not a Mac user myself, so it’s hard for me to tell, but i think your processor sounds a bit on the low end. I recently upgraded from my old core2duo, with a slightly lower clock frequency than yours, to a higher end i7 CPU and damn, that was something completely different, all my problems went away. Now i have to mention i also upgraded the mobo, RAM and audio interface, so i can’t tell how much the CPU helped alone, but i believe it is the main factor in my system.

It’s good advice thank you
