The WIP thread - work In progress

I just got the Nil’s K1V, which is a Kawai K1 VST.

Here is a littel experiment made in approx 15 minutes…

The 6th part of ‘Inner Space’.
Done with renoise and Synth1 VST. (and some drums samples)
Almost finish. needs some smaler fixes here and there…

Experimented with a few things over the weekend, came up with a custom micro tonal scale that i really like, made this to test it out,i think it sounds really nice

And another with a different scale i made that started off very childlike and playful but i couldn’t help myself and started de-tuning it made it in 11/4 too featuring my step daughter Amelia

Very Jarre like. I dig it, although I miss some drums.

Surprise! I’ve expected more drumology stuff, but instead you delivered something more “listenable”. I like them both. Microtonal Test has some really nice sounds, the drone is great, but also everything else. Reminds me of some 90s dark Trip Hop. Choklah has a really nice breakbeat, the style reminds me a little bit of Decoder (that’s some rare DNB I can listen to). But you chose the better instrumentation. IMHO that’s a massive improvement in comparison to “drumology”. Nice atmosphere. Keep those sounds coming! Diggin’ it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I didn’t really touch Renoise in 2026, but 2 months ago I changed a few things of my latest attempt in creating some music again, and currently it still sounds like this:

Finished now and released

Nice album!
Älskar låt-titlarna och känslan i ditt album!

Thank you very much
The titles came from what I imagined while listening to them while working on them.
The long tracks are like small stories. Beginning dramatic and ongoing changes.
But all tracks ends happy.
The feeling of the 1980’s suburb life in south east Denmark.
An album done from heart. Also doing a big risk. But I really enjoyed doing it.

I’m trying to nail the speed of this track. Sometimes it gives me a feeling that the tempo is falling a little, especially in the main parts which starts at 0.48. Do you get that feeling too, and if so what do you think could be done with it? I have gone through all the elements and found nothing to be mathematically wrong, so I guess it’s a matter of perception.

Probably. Sounds good to me in 140 BPM. What’s the release date?

Hmm okay. Thanks  Hehe, when I’m done with this song I think it will not be long. But its hard to stop fixing it when I discover new things all the time.

Still hammering out how to morph the motif into varying degrees of moods, but guess the true and tested method of modifying parameters in Permut8 wins again lol.

Did this with Schismtracker and it is quite some fun! Workflow is different to Renoise, but everything can be controlled with the keyboard. Really everything! Crazy good short cuts in the pattern editor. I think when you are used to it you fly with this thing. Sample editor can only do basic stuff (compared to Renoise sample editor) and you might want to export the sample to a DAW or audio editor and load it back into Schism.

I think the arrangement is more or less finished. Any ideas? I think the 303 bass is too loud. And I need a title. Will reupload the video when it is finished. Had to figure out again how OBS works…

All instruments taken from this collection: GitHub - msx2plus/msx_iti_collection: collection of ITI instruments for openMPT + impulse tracker created to be reasonably high fidelity and highly optimized · GitHub

I think I will also compose the track for the Mutant Breaks Compo in schism and then import into Renoise for final adjustments  .

Yeah, and one day you’ll end up like @ffx who’s fixing his mixes for years and still isn’t satisfied and probably never will be. Note: There is NO PERFECT mix! :slightly_smiling_face:

Why would one like to do that?

More percussion and background synths to fill some gaps.

Yes, but not way too loud. The mix is already pretty good.

What’s the benefit? Why not Renoise right away? It might be fun or nostalgic or whatever to use an old tracker, but the result also sounds like it was made on an old tracker. :slightly_smiling_face:

Btw, are you aware that your new black avatar is invisible in dark mode forum?

Thanks! I saw that the avatar is black with the dark theme, but was too lazy to change it. Will do this.
I have to sit less and lie more often. When working with the laptop from bed Schism is nice, because it’s light weight, and the GUI is perfectly visible. Also everything can be controlled with the keyboard which is another plus. The maintainer recently fixed something and CPU usage went down from 20% of one core to below 5%, which is fine now.

and I like limiting myself

Will add some more elements and start another track also. :fu:

Yeah I agree, but this is about the elements in the song, not the mixing. I´m still feeling something is up with the first “verse”, but getting close now

Ok great, and :fu:u2. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Actually same difference, one could get lost in details too. That’s my point. But of course it’s done when it’s done. Definitely not a moment sooner. :slightly_smiling_face:

:joy: my eyes.. i thought thats a thumb up.. lmao

My latest almost finished Renoise track:
Using KORG M1 only (once again…)

I am not sure about the mixing… am I on right track? (unintended pun, pure luck..)

Didn’t listen on headphones but earpods (tbh I know them so well that I usually can mix with it, except the non-hearable things for sure).
I feel the drums (at least kick & snare) are a bit too underwhelming given how they sound. It could work softer, but then I would change the sounds. They feel a bit lost behind in the mix.
The chimer effect that you use as transition sound too high.

About the synths, it’s pretty okay, nothing shocking.
