Thoughts On Sample Recorder

My issue with the sample recorder is that it takes Esc and Enter input and makes it a bad thing. Why not have the sample recorder not pay attention to Esc and Enter so that you can actually use those keys in the normal functions and not have them stop or totally end and scrap recording? For one, it conflicts with toggling record, and secondly, you can’t trigger sample playback in sample editor by hitting enter. But the main thing is that it causes crazy issues: losing partial recordings.

Also, I know that “renoise doesn’t do audio!” is something that some people say, but uh, obviously it does audio since you can record audio through stereo mix or wave if you have that loopback feature and then use autoseek, continue playback from line, f9 etc, etc…
“This audio program doesn’t do audio tracks” yep, sure it doesn’t. and I’m not asking for audio tracks, I am asking for better sample recording functionality.
So with ASIO, you can use inputs to tracks and stuff to isolate the track you want to record, sorry if that’s unclear…
Anyways, it would be cool to be able to record multiple inputs, since that’s what everything else should aim to do in ASIO mode, and since it seems as if Renoise should already be able to.
I’m not saying that it needs to add another audio path to memory in the signal path of each track with a recording boolean switch so that it doesn’t negatively affect performance in typical conditions, I’m just saying that I don’t see why two or more sample recorders can’t record some inputs to separate samples at the same time.

Fair suggestions, and ones I’d like to see implemented. And more, like disk-streaming. But check previous threads in this forums, a lot of these ideas have been thrashed out before.

Personally, at the moment I’m finding satisfying work-arounds by using Renoise slaved to Reaper, but I understand this isn’t practicable for everyone.

I agree with you on the prehear with Enter key and a little less on recording in Pattern Editor (I wish it would just always disable recording to pattern when the sample recording dialog is visible, but all of that might be scriptable)
isn’t it possible to enter different record sample keyboard shortcuts?

+1 for option to ignore Esc. every time I record a guitar sample I need to place it to pattern to hear overall result. so I hit Esc to place a c-4 and then reopen sample recorder again and again. placing notes before the recording is not a solution because I don’t really know what length it will be and where it’ll be placed for sure.

@Ch1PTh0rn: doesn’t sound like a good recording workflow.
But I wonder why you are having to enter the sample in the pattern? Unless you want to play back the recording in some other tune (highly requested feature!), the sample preview will allow you to hear the result instantly, with or without track effects.

Hrm I don’t really understand what you’re trying to do, but the sample recorder works really smoothly for me. Enter to start / stop recording, escape to cancel it. Couldn’t get any easier imo

it would be nice if you could feed the audio from a track or instrument into the sample recorder, something like “input: route from instrument/track xx” and record your (vst) jamming bye
