Has any body else upgraded their ubuntu? Have you had any problems?
I have noticed that on my laptop the Unity 2d is actually more sluggish than the 3d.
Another thing i’ve noticed is a much better integration of jackd with a new program called Cadence that controls the Pulse Audio and Alsa bridges … and do it automatically.
It took me an evening to get everything feeling right, but I have to say i’m quite liking it.
No because it doesn’t support my sound card
ouch, is that linux in general or just ubuntu?
first, cadence is not specific to ubuntu 11.10, nor is it specific to ubuntu. I use Cadence on debian squeeze and avlinux (also debian) … but it’s certainly not an ubuntu 11.10 exclusive package.
I have a few systems I’ve been working with that are ubuntu studio 11.10 based with kxstudio repos installed and haven’t noticed any sluggishness like you describe.
I’d honestly recommend if you’re trying to weigh one distro or dist upgrade against another to simply install the “upgrade” fresh on a new partition. Make some space and benchmark with your real-world workflow/applications instead of take someone’s word for it — far too many “experts” out there if you know what I mean.
@simonwellander -You’re not saying 11.10 breaks support for your sound card are you?? That wouldn’t be the case. I’m assuming you just mean the card isn’t supported in linux period??.. Even if a manufacturer does not offer linux drivers or support (very few do) that doesn’t mean someone in the linux community hasn’t built support… I’d honestly be shocked if that were not the case. Probably worth a bit of digging on http://www.alsa-project.org/
Dear Cadence,
You are a warm slimy sheath that has descended upon me from a heaven of loveliness that I can not contemplate. I love you and all the runny stuff inside you.
ah… btw I’m not using the unity desktop which is why I haven’t noticed the sluggishness you have - w/o doubt unity is extremely resource hungry, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use a different desktop environment. I’ve got lxde and xfce on top of my ubuntuStudio 11.10 (w/ kxstudio on top) and its lightning fast.
I’ve upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10
Well, nothing really special specific to this version, to say.
I’m just experimenting with JACK routing. Connecting Pure Data with Renoise and stuff.
Unity doesn’t seem to work that bad. The only thing that was is a problem is some strange message about network configuration appearing during the boot, and the the problem with logging that I had just after the install, that was solved deleting the .Xauthority file.
Unity might not “work bad” but it is resource intensive, unnecessary and not recommended for linux systems that are tuned for low latency audio work. This is precisely why ubuntuStudio went with the xfce desktop instead of gnome 3 or unity.
ive had E17 compiled and installed for a good while using svn, thats quick as well, and always handy for a backup desktop, but i use a 3g usb stick for my internet, and its tricky to get setup in E17,(im sure it works, just cant be arsed to set it up:-)
@c-blu, i had that network config message too after i installed a fresh 11.10 on a friends laptop, happened while booting with the ethernet cable plugged in, didnt stop the internet from working when the laptop was fully booted tho. i just told my friend to boot up without the cable plugged in, not sure if any updates have fixed that??.
