Recently, I’ve enjoyed making sound by using good-old wavetable synthesis in Renoise 3.0.
I’m using tools like PadSynth and Selection Shaper to generate various waveforms, then I thought of 1 request.
Sometimes I try to make a detuned unison sound, something like supersaw. To emulate such sound, I have to copy the source sample 5 or 7 times, and change the finetuning and panning of each sample manually.
The result is good enough for me, but the procedure is somewhat troublesome and the file size grows big especially when I use PadSynth.
So I think it’s nice if there is a Unison option in the Sample Properties.
For example please imagine, when I hit 1 piano key, the 5 play-lines start running on 1 waveform with slightly different speed each, instead of 5 individual (copied) sample waveforms (when the Unison voice is set to “5”). So, I do not have to copy a sample many times anymore.
Of course it won’t fit some cases (drumloop, vocal sample, etc) and the cpu load will increase easily, but it’s somewhat interesting and worth trying, i think… I don’t know about programming-wise though.
I thought the regression in R3 in sample mapping functionality (pkg download has same content as v2.8 but is 3x bigger) was made as a step back, to eventually make a great step forward, to a place where sample mappings can once more point to the same sample, but also sample start/end, tuning, and other stuff is bound to the mapping instead of bound to the sample. You are a team member though Sato, so perhaps you might know more about this than I!
Cas? How do you do that? I seem to remember in 2.8 I could put samples into keyzones multiple times, but no longer in 3.0.
I was mainly using that feature to create scales myself, most of which are built-into 3.0 now, so I don’t really miss it that much–also in 2.8 it didn’t allow you to specify different finetunings, did it? So it wasn’t much use for detuned unison super stuff, you still had to duplicate the sample.
Is there maybe a sample effects command by which you can adjust the fine-tuning per row/note hit? That way you could easily pre-build a 5-7 component detuned unison into a phrase.
Ahh, I’m not such core developement member, so I don’t know about future plan at all.
And maybe I’m misunderstanding you though, you meant something like sample wave-alias settings??
(i.e. we can copy a single sample as some “wave-aliases” and can set different setting to each?)
If so, it’s nice too. Although it’s more better if we can set unison aseasy as possible.
Recently I’ve touched the unison functions in Synth1 and SERUM demo and I feel such easiness is welcome.

Fundamentally, if it can do in 2.8, it should be able to do in 3.0 too, I think.
Maybe you mean putting 1 sample into keyzones multiple times (without duplicating)??
If so it’s impossible in 2.8 too.

Yeah, I also thought of it, but unfortunately such command doesn’t exist. I’ve tried Ux/Dx commands though, it’s too rough to finetune per note. But I agree with the thought.

If you stack a slice marker in exactly the same spot, you can have sort a like wave alias settings, i.o.w have different tuning settings without having to copy the same sound for every tuning.

I meant with my comment, that perhaps in a future release we’ll get the old sample/mapping possibilities with more flexibility (and less redundant samples)
