is there an option to enable a vertical highlight above and below the cursor’s position? the track highlight is often not enough for my eyes to orient to the cursor all too quickly - with or without my current eye-killing theme lol

No. But with a proper theme, this shouldn’t be a problem.
i disagree, a visual feature like this would help everybody, regardless whether their theme is sufficiently “proper”.
Have you tried alt+z?
i was trying out alt-z per your suggestion and stumbled upon alt-q which selects the whole dang column!! thanks
