Video Tracking

Hey All,

Recently, we had a one hour ‘competition’ using Renoise 2.5(beta). The rules were simple, track a song using the included renoise instruments and native DSP only.

I decided to record me tracking this entry, with me commentating so you know what I’m thinking.

This is the Video Here: (300mb, 72 mins long)

Few things to mention - this is not a tutorial. I talk a little about creative workflow, but it’s hard to speak at any length when you’re in a hurry! Zero planning went into this. I had no idea what I was going to do until I did it :P

I hope you get something out of it …

Regards,
Mick :)

Nice little tune you got there Mick! :)

I tried to download the xrns-file, but Renoise says “Unknown or unsupported song filetype!” when I try to open it. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

And how do you get those colored lines under each trackname?

Sorry for no more musical questions… yet.

thanks! (=

Yeah that was interesting :)
He’s using Renoise 2.5 beta, but none of the new features I think.

Happy new year!

I liked the video very much! Thank you for showing your skills. I’m impressed!

Your workflow is nutter. Nice one.

Right-click in the Pattern Editor → Show Track Colors.

Relates to the Pattern Matrix (which is never used in the video, hardcore tracker style)

Just watched the whole thing, awesome work man. I envy your knowledge of tones :D

I’ve sat down in front of the screen with some food and a glass of coke like I was gonna watch a movie, and pressed “play”.
Watching this one was really cool, so thanks for sharing it.

I watched this movie on the home theater system while eating some popcorn.

Interesting action movie, I would say. :)

i had sum wine lol :>>

anyways, stuff like this is great! i wish some of the guys here with sick dnb/breakcore skillz would record them talking about and build some beats.

it’s so nice to get both the production side and the renoise workflow demonstration in one package.

thanks for posting this.

as someone new to renoise, i found it very useful.

What do you know… there are some menu-options there too. They’re everywhere! :)

Thanks!

And yes, I found the video helpful too. Small tricks that I never thought of before. Thanks for that, Mick! You should do this with every song you make. :dribble:

Thanks for the feedback guys - it was an interesting experiment and it sounds like I’ve had enough positive feedback to try it again sometime!

Overall I found it quite difficult to talk and focus on the music composition and talking sense at the same time. I generally don’t think and express many words while tracking … that part of the brain is generally asleep. This was a bigger creative challenge than anticipated.

Asking the question “How and why do I do this?” while you track is sometimes difficult because I often don’t know why I do some things …

Thanks, it was great to watch and observe as a Renoise noob, appreciate the time you took to share this with us :yeah:

watching the video was good fun. and the tune sounds like some japanese serie theme… awesome i love it! :D

Btw mick, you got birds in your house?

We’ve got 2 cats.

The only birds that have entered the house have been dead.

I heard that too! I thought it was either seagulls or monkeys, so I settled for an open window and seagulls, either way it fitted the tune nicely :D

Downloading the vid!

But the zip is corrupted :(
