I have to say I’m quite happy with RN as it is… with the delay column & quantize plus the note send it took care of a couple of biggies for me.
There are a couple left tho that I’d like to see sometime in the future, and they have been mentioned before…
Rewire, some form of audio track and some way to detach windows from the main window, so you can throw say the mixer window into your second monitor and have the arranger in another.
An audio track is by far the most important to me personally tho, just because of the music I make. As it is now I cut em up into verse/ref/verse/ref aso, and sometimes I even put in trigger points (09xx) along each vocal track, just so I don’t have to rewind to the beginning just to fire up the vocals again and then listen through a minute and a half to get to the point I’m working on. So yeah, it is doable atm, but it is very time consuming.
Then there’s a couple of small things that I’ve come across (maybe these things are doable and I’ve just missed it… i dunno).
Grouping tracks together in the mixer view so you can change the track volume for a bunch at the same time while keeping the level difference the same, if that makes sense.
And the other is routing one send channel to another one, atm if I pop in a send device on a send channel and point it to another one I get no sound… but maybe I’m just missing something obvious, it’s been known to happen hehe.
to be able to hit play from the cursor (in the middle of the pattern) and hear the samples previous to the cursor. i spend so much time listening to sections of patterns that i’m not programming…it’s killing me!
This is a much needed part of the way Renoise plays back our songs seeing as its modern sampler with huge memory , ideal for recording live vocals instruments . Not sure how easy it is to integrate, at a guess moderately hard…
My request, is a more intuitive Pattern arranger the current system is way out of date and not up with the rest of the high quality features Renoise has today
I find it hard to finish songs , after 20 patterns or so i lose track of where i am in the song (damn thats why my songs are never more than a minute long!) , maybe the new zoom-able features will enable songs to be written with as little as 8-16 patterns …??
One of the reasons renoise tracks sound so good is that Renoise doesn’t have arranger like fruityloops and all that stuff. Really, I may talk about it later some time, now I am in a bit hurry and tired.
The lookback feature is not VERY hard to implement, I have worked with it, in other tracker. Sample wise it’s not too hard to look back for the last note and compute all the pattern effects. In most cases there is quite a few or no pattern effects between the start and current position so it’s pretty fast. VST wise it’s harder. As VST’s doesn’t have so tight control. I have experimented with using discard buffer and rendering since last note, but it takes quite a lot of CPU and is not that useful anyway. If the note is not too far away, it’s tolerable, but you still may get few seconds of latency before pattern starts playback from the wanted position.
Renoise is lightweight program (now) with good sound quality and a very usable GUI, but i don’t want a heavy monster with features that i don’t never use.
Long story short, release any features by extention; take what you need and build your perfect Renoise setup (a super DAW with long file support, lite version with beatslicer, an so on).
I’m not talking about API for 3d part developer, just a modular approach.
-metadevice for sidechaining ( oh noes )
-live setup
-long sample support
-pimped sample editior (e.g drawing instrument envelope on it and other stuff which i posted somewhere here)
-liverecording
-plugin-container for the xrns project tools
not so common vote:
-renoise as vst
-xrni improvements
-customizable themes (changing knobs/jpgs/vu-meter)
-render song to mp3/ogg directly
