behringer is a shit, terrible, do not buy that.
alesis is far good…!
Although I don’t like Behringer at all, I’ve actually heard they sell some really good monitors for the price, they are often recommended.
My actual contribution to this thread is: don’t buy KRKs just because they seem popular, listen to a couple of models and compare, and when comparing don’t forget Mackies.
After listening to KRK Rokit 5 and Alesis M1 Active MK2, which I then bought and tested for 2 weeks before returning them, raising my budget and listening to KRK Rokit 8, Yamaha HS80M and Mackie MR8 MKII, the Mackies were the only ones that made me stop and say “hmmm, this actually sounds quite real”. KRKs (Rokit 8, I’m not even talking about 5s) had uncelar treble and not enough mids, Yamahas were better but their treble is unneccessarily sharp imo and bass is rolled off too sharply for my needs (and too strong, but their bass correction setting could solve that).
I’m not telling you to go buy the Mackies, but definitely do try them out when deciding what to buy. 5 inch version costs approximately the same as KRK Rokit 5 and Alesis M1 Active MK2 here, 8 inch just a bit more than Yamaha HS80M and KRK Rokit 8. They are not ideal, the main problem is their bass and trebble correction settings are useless since their only usable as monitors with +2db (max) treble and +0db (min) bass (and that’s still a wee bit more bass than I would like), but that’s not a huge problem and they sound a level better than everything else I listed to me.
Oh, and Adam released new entry-level series of monitors, a pair of Adam F5s cost around 500 USD here, I haven’t heard them but if you don’t need subbass I bet they’re worth listening to as well.
You’d be better off researching the products themselves rather than being blinded by brand names. Like all companies some of the stuff Behringer and Alesis makes is awesome, some of it not so much.
This is the only way to do it. I guess if you have a mix that you know is mixed correctly, and you play it to see if it sounds correct, but even that is imperfect.
Same here, The bass and mid ranges can be a bit deceiving but once you learn their nuances you are golden. I sold my first pair of MK2’s got some Krk’s sold those then went back to the Alesis.
