Hi,

background info;
playing games on the C64, this one in 1988
. The bassline is so damn funky, don’t think the youtube compression / rendition does enough justice.
I hate chiptune, except maybe its from VENETIAN SNARES
Neat
Cool c64 vibe. I love this one, but I never heard it in a game/cracktro:
Thanks for your contribution ![]()
you are welcome

What like nintendpwn?
Does this count?
Dunno
Not really. How old are you, used a 16 bit or 8 bit era computer?

Impossible. There are so many outstanding tunes that are equal. Besides of that links aren’t available for every song (like Geir Tjelta - A New Beginning). And personally I distinguish SID tunes from everything else when it comes to chiptunes. SID is clearly the most special, it has such a pure and unique sound and needs its own category. And when it comes to Amiga, I’m not even 100% sure if one could call something like Jazzcat - Electric City a chiptune, because the drums are “too good” (for a chiptune) and the file size is 12 KB, not to mention stuff like Jochen Hippel - A Prehistoric Tale or Charles Deenen & Reyn Ouwehand - Unreal Flight Level. On the other hand Random Voice - Monday, which is clearly a chiptune when it comes to sound, even takes 15 KB due to the fact that it’s a MOD. On Amiga I think Pink - Cruisin (file size 4 KB) is the best in the spirit of being a chiptune (= as small as possible). If you consider SID tunes to be chiptunes, then I could name literally thousands of equally great stuff. Only the songs created by Thomas E. Petersen, Thomas Mogensen, Reyn Ouwehand, Geir Tjelta, Jeroen Tel and so on alone could fill hours and days. My favorite SID changes from day to day, but usually it’s Reyn Ouwehand - Last Ninja 3 Earth or Thomas E. Petersen - Ikari Intro. Nevertheless the most unique sound is the ninja sound by Matt Gray, and when I think of C64 and SID sound, I always think of this tune (which isn’t even my favorite of that game):
Of course not.

Thanks, nice tips. Interesting, there also is this more recent version, but it seems like they stolen the title then? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M7nblSESTA
Karatemuffins is not bad either ![]()
Sometimes I feel like you, too. I very often look at my clock once a day and see “13:37”. No joke.
I love the Jogeir version, but indeed it’s a cover. The original by Jochen Hippel was made in 1990, whereas Jogeir’s version was released 3 years later. Just like Pink - Summertime is a copy of Thomas E. Petersen - Alibi .
Btw, the chiptune that I’ve recently listened to the most is:
Maybe not of ALL time, but this is a tune that really stood out to me recently. The sound choices are zany and it just rocks. Tobokegao has been doing cool stuff with his music and label, definitely worth keeping an eye on.
@TNT Very nice new selection for me! Thanks. All would greatly work as intro tune or as a remix. I’ve added now some quite lame sounding (filter wise) c64 player here (and here and here), and a lot of tunes (press space 2x to load next song). Kind of interesting how oversampling ruins the c64 sound. EDIT: I’ve added proper oversampling, panning and interpolation, maybe sounds a bit better now. ALso converted to audio worklet ![]()
@NPC1 A real classic one (Romeo Knight - Enigma Gun)! Love it, too.
@TNT The original Auf Wiedersehen Monty SID by Rob Hubbbard is awesome, too. Have a listen, very retro
Later on there will be fancy ringmod modulation.
You act like I don’t know that tune. ![]()
So the reason for this thread is that you’re looking for chiptunes that you can implement in your “intro demo”? I think Rob Hubbard created two songs that fit much better as an intro sound, Ace 2 and Lightforce. And I assume that you already know the best chiptune composer on Amiga, which is Manfred Linzner aka Pink (check his tunes like Disissid2theme, Inside, Terraforming, Gone and so on). And check also my favorite SID composer, which is Thomas E. Petersen aka Laxity. Pink covered a couple of tunes by Laxity, another one would be for example Return of the Space Cowboys Part 2 (Abyss), which originally is called Zimxusaf. Of course we also have to mention the group “Maniacs of Noise” when it comes to great SID sound, its members from the 80s/90s speak for themselves. For a quick overview (completeness not guaranteed) DeepSID is very good, check also Thomas Mogensen aka Drax and the ones I’ve mentioned above. And let’s not forget those names that aren’t that big, for example Jens-Christian Huus - Chordian.
That, too, but I am looking for the very best chiptunes in general.
I know you know
I am just trying to improve the sound quality of the c64 replayer code, not sounding most original. Trying better cutoff values and maybe later resonance damping. Also panning seems to make the songs much better sounding. Resonance suppression will be difficult, because the c64 filter sounds quite “quacky” and it’s part of the signature or so. Maybe some dipping eq around 2-4 kHz would improve the sound?
Here, these are fun: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Reyn Ouwehand uses some specific kind of ringmod, which my player does not seem to support (based on jsSID by Hermit)
havent listened to much chiptune cause it doesnt click with me, but one of the best (if not the best) ive heard is Aryx.s3m, came bundled in with my copy of PlayerPRO for the mac.
