Thanks for helping, but in this case its just a bug. All filetype associations are OK, Windows just starts wrong player for some reason. No biggie, I usually play song straight from Winamp anyway.
When I tested the RC of “seven” earlier this summer, I just couldn’t figure out where exactly the so-called improvements compared to Vista were to be found. I didn’t really “feel” any apparent improvements at all. So Windows 7 seemed more like a new service pack to Vista rather than a new fresh code OS.
I’ve built myself another dedicated audio computer. I’m awaiting my preordered latest Intel 80GB SSD disc, and when it arrives I will run my OS and apps on that. At the time I built the new computer, I actually purchased and installed a OEM license of WinXP Home SP3 32-bit as it cost me just $100 and Win7 wasn’t available yet.
Now, I understand that Microsoft wants everybody to migrate to Windows 7, but I haven’t been able to locate the upgrade prices for WinXP. The thing is, Windows 7 comes in different versions. So my question is:
What version of Windows 7 would you guys recommend for a dedicated audio computer, and why? This is the information I’d like to know but can’t find anywhere.
My specs in short are: Intel core i7, 3GB RAM, Delta 1010LT, two Velociraptor HDDs for audio, and hopefully soon a brand new SSD for the OS. I use lots of VST instruments and effects, all of them being 32-bit.
I suggest go for pro. version, 32bit. ultimate adds some stuff like bitlocker drive encrypt. or IKE / IPsec, stuff you probably won’t use.
anyway, you’re right. 7 is some kind of vista + SP whatever.
still, the memory footprint is way better plus small things like … explorer snappiness makes it more usable. so … 7 > vista.
question is why do you use vista/7 in the first place; if not for DX10 ?
I wish choosing between different languages was a feature the Professional Edition had. Well, it is worth the few extra Euros to me - just placed my pre-order for the Ultimate Edition.
I can just recommend getting a System Builder version. Who needs a printed manual and Microsofts support via telephone anyway ^^
I’m fine with the Home Edition and will switch to 64bit. Had the beta running a while here and shouldn’t have too much problems. Also was lucky to get one of the limited 50 EUR preorder copies, so i can’t complain.
Lucky you. Well, I can get along without a nice box, manual, etc…
If I really think about it, I’ve never had any boxed software. It’s all been download versions from the net… and that’s where I prefer to get help from if I have any questions anyway, so… ^^
Well, I’'ve been surprised aswell that my System Builder Copy of Win7 Ultimate arrived yesterday.
It’s registered/activated/whatnot.
The only hassle I need to go through is installing everything over once again.
I’m pretty sure that re-installing Windows will be a thing of the past once this is finished. Fucking Windows XP
Damn, my copy will be sent 5th of November
There seems to be a way to get the old quicklaunch bar back at least:
got my sysbuilder edition today too
W7 installs in 15 minutes or so. And you don’t need to download many updates and servicepacks, because there are none
That’s true. But with everything, I meant like… everything.
All my audio apps, plugins, player, internet stuff, games, setting everything up…
I spent all weekend installing and setting up stuff and I’m still not there yet. I admit I’ve been slacking a bit (lot), though, too ^^
I’m pretty impressed so far to be honest… it runs all the “pretty” vista style shit with ease, none of that “oh wait a second, you want me to animate that? ok just let me load it… ok… there! presto! how pretty is that!! wow” bullshit, but at the same time it took me all of 20 minutes to dumb it down to win2k looks and feel (which I’m just used to… we all hate those “new” things right? )
The only thing that wasn’t installed from the start were the proprietry ATI drivers and the “private beta” drivers for the audiophile 192, which naturally they wouldnt want to include. Good vibes so far
Oh, I only need to install Renoise and audiocard drivers on the C partition, my projects and sounds are on the D: partition.
I could use a little help from someone, who has at least a Professional version running and is able to work with regedit, even the recent Beta version should be fine. The situation is, that the current drivers from M-Audio produce a deadlock on shutdown and one isn’t able to reboot cleanly or shutdown the computer without forcing it. There is a solution though.
Basically follow this post from the M-Audio forum to stop the audio services on the shutdown event. This can be done with the group policy editor, which isn’t available for Home users though. That editor stores it’s settings in the registry and i’d need a copy of that part to apply it to my Home version until M-Audio fixes their drivers.
Anyone up for this task?
Edit: Forgot the actual link. Also change the event from Logoff to Shutdown.

Edit again: Problem solved with another beta driver for Win 7.
I’m about to install all my audio software again. Is it problematic to put my VST folder into the programs folder, like i had on XP? Dunno if there might be problems from the restricted rights in that one.
That’s discouraged in Vista and 7. I don’t know if it will cause problems or not, though.
I don’t think Vista or 7 will allow apps to install user data to the Program Files folder in the background anymore.
It does.
There are 2 options: you leave UAC on and need to manually confirm any change made to the system (not that bad) or disable UAC.
Used an extra folder now to be on the save side.
Just installed 7 64bit yesterday,
So far so good. I Like a lot of the new features like the dragging of maximised windows etc.
Only thing that caused me a bit of bother so far was what I thought were graphics card issues:
Soon worked out that it was my pet annoyance - cleartype which is now switchable within in windows (can use the start menu search to find)
Also switched off font smoothing:
start menu search:
advanced system settings; click settings box and find check box.
Now looking as pretty much as sharp as XP for me (though couldn`t get my tweakforce drivers working unfortuantely)
Now to install all my VSTs
