•••xenoba••• entities - remix competition

That’s ok! :slightly_smiling_face:
But you’re contradicting not only yourself, but also the official definition.

That’s what you said, that’s what makes a remix a remix, and that’s also the official definition of it.

I’m very surprised that there are people who literally say as long as the starting material is from the original it’s a remix, no matter if you turn every single instrument and the composition as well into something completely different that has absolutely nothing to do with the original. Especially not when listening. So you’re literally saying that everything is a remix, which means every single existing song could be considered as a remix of any song you can imagine. You could create ANYTHING and declare it’s a remix. But unfortunately this way “remix” competitions and even the term “remix” would become meaningless. I’ll keep that in mind for future “remix competitions”. There has to be clear rules and a clear understanding.

Of course, in fact he didn’t change the original. All he did is to create a new mix for being played in the clubs. It’s like you’re having one version for streaming and one for the clubs. Actually it’s a remaster in the end and not a remix. The term “remix” has a different meaning in this case. Just like “buck” or whatever can have different meainings.

Anyway guys, I don’t want to spoil the fun. Keep doing what you’re doing. And those who didn’t do anything yet should start doing something. There’s still time left for new “remixes”. And now it has become WAY EASIER to create a remix, because obviously there are no rules and you can create whatever you want. Just do it! Mr. zensphere is still waiting for new mixes, so don’t dare to disappoint him. :guitar:

such is life :upside_down_face: no rules, only consequences. rules are human inventions, consequences follow from the natural order of the cosmos. hopefully, our rules reflect that order, but if history is anything to go by, I’m doubtful, lol

but yes, I would prefer people use the provided source material as a starting point, otherwise I would agree with you, that is not a remix. extreme transformations of the source material (including single-cycle synthesis) are explicitly welcome, however

MrZensphere, do you mind if I upload my remix of your track to my youtube?

Yeah, man, go for it!

BTW, this thing isn’t dead, I’m just still waiting on a couple of tracks

Just a quick reminder: The deadline is on July 15th 2024!
There’s more than enough time to make another “remix”, guys…

You’ll post them here as soon as you’ll receive them? And your “winners” as well?

No one can tell or prove that IF one’s creating an own composition instead of keeping parts of the original, just like a remix is officially defined.

here’s one of them:

you can either be “right” or happy, the choice is yours bud
trust me, I was married once lol

That Plateu Sigma remix is neat!

Might as well post this here. Just a simple Renoise play-through video of my take on it:

Mr. Garbanzo Drum and Bass remix. Thanks for sharing the original file, it was interesting to see how you work. I didn’t really do too much besides crank up the distortion and tempo. I wanted to keep the original essence and thought the original bass sounded cool with more distortion.

Cool. I like it! Although the mix seems a little bass and rhythm heavy to me. Would you be open to me reworking the mix from the xrns? Fine to say no, ofc

Thank you for listening. I would be happy for you to do anything to it. I only added soothe and tonal balance control, but I don’t feel that soothe was entirely required.

@corb you say you didn’t do much but your interpretation has totally different vibe! Very dark and oppressive, I like it. The distorted bass sound is wicked! Though, as MrZensphere alluded to already, it’s perhaps a bit too forward in the mix. But the sound itself is wonderful. Cool stuff!

It’s fun & interesting to hear all the different interpretations of the same source material.

Thank you for listening. It is interesting how much the feeling can change with tempo, some additional drum patterns, and distortion. My favorite thing was how the original bass design changed so radically by layering distortions. I was definitely a little heavy handed with the mixing though.
I agree, I think the most interesting thing about the community is being able to share xrns files and having people manipulate the original samples directly and seeing what people do with them.

Personally I can only be happy when things are going right.
I assume that the Plateau Sigma mix is your favorite so far. It’s a nice mix and indeed it’s a REMIX! I’ve heard the name “Plateau Sigma” somewhere in the past, I just don’t know when and why.

I like it even if you didn’t do too much as you said. This is a remix with a completely different take on the original, and that’s what it’s all about. Well done. Mr. zensphere didn’t say it out loud, but it’s obvious that these words match your remix, too:

I really like your videos in which you’re decribing your production process and why you’ve done what in which way. Keep it up. That’s much better than flashing effects or whatever. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for listening.
I won’t reopen the semantic discussion from earlier, but I will say it was a fun and interesting experience working with source material from a genre I don’t really work in it. Considering I changed the genre to one that typically pushes I these sound effects to the background a bit more and brings the bass more forward, I can say that I struggled to find a place for some of these sounds and probably just deferred to moving them more towards the atmospheric. Maybe not the best use of them, but I think it served the purpose I intended to use them for. I definitely view the opportunity to remix as an open invitation to rework the material as much or as little as required.

Philosophy aside, good luck then, friend  That’s definitely how most of us operate most of the time. Although life has an annoying habit of not always going “right”…

I don’t know about that. There have been a lot of good tracks! Honestly quite pleased with the quality overall

Yup, the quality is good. It makes me want to hold a remix/reinterpretation competition just because I’m curious to hear all the different results.

Thanks! I think most people agree so I will. But I need to find a better way to make those subtitles. Writing them takes a bit of time but not too bad. Implementing them takes ages! :sleepy:
