i also purchased at 1.281. but it was the release of the 1.5 beta that gave me the push in the right direction. 
I hurried to get Renoise before the 1.5 final was released because of the price. I only used the 1.5 beta before and I actually bought 1.281 without ever trying it out first. 
I only very recently got back into writing music. Always used trackers when I was very young, but also did a fair amount on Cubase as I got older, then came a big gap with nothing. Was planning on givng a lot more hosts a try. Did my first couple of songs back on it with FruityLoops and didn’t really like it, although some part of it work out quite well, played about with Reason etc, but wanted to stayt simple to start. Got onto Renoise with a fair few more programs I wanted to try and just found myself coming back and back to it, so after doing this for a while thought I ought to buy it really 
Still want to give EnergyXT a good try out, especially after hearing how well they work together
