Cheap Hydra Tricks

K, so I’ve got this wonderful new metadevice, that I know opens a world of possibilities, but I can’t figure out for the life of me where to start messing around with it.

So, my question to you guys is: What are the best tricks you can accomplish with the hydra device? Can you add numbers? Can you calculate pi? Can you bake a pie? Can you eat a delicious strawberry rhubarb pie? How about a donkey rhubarb pie? Mmmmmm aphex twin.

So yes. I want to see hydra tricks. The cheaper the better. I’m even open to dirty gutter hydra tricks.

haha ok, i had tripple filters, all doing things at the same time. so yeah, grab 3 of the native filters and set the hydra for each cuttoff/freq and experiment with the different bands

It just occured that using multiple bandpass filters, one could create a very effective comb filter. I’ll have to try that when I get home :P

I guess it’s mostly useful when used with keytracking… and it SCREAMS for an “amplitude tracking” device. Yeah, that ain’t tricks, but I haven’t had time to really use 2.1 yet…

The trouble is, once the signal has gone through the first bandpass filter, there is no more audio remaining in the frequency ranges that you’d apply other bandpass filters to in order to create the comb effect.

So currently, the only way to create the effect yourself is to create multiple send tracks, each with a differently-tuned bandpass filter on it, with your original audio sent to each, then finally recombine the results of each filter into another send track to get your comb.

Unfortunately, this places all filter parameters squarely outside the reach of one single Hydra device, which can currently only operate on devices within its own chain.

INdeed , in order to achieve the comb filter effect we need parallel routing of the filters

cheap trick of today is sort a like ‘cross synthesizing’ between 2 dsp/vst’s by having the hydra input slider control both dsp/vst instances dry/wet ratio, by having one instance min/max values flipped.

I tried using key track with the ring modulator before I tried your demo. The problem is there is no scaling curve that will follow the key according to whatever logarithm relates key to frequency.
What I mean is; I was able to get C4 to correspond to a reasonably harmonic frequency and if I hit C5 it goes to double that frequency but the notes in between are pretty out of tune.

Do you reckon this a resolution problem or a problem with the curves or the Range options (which I don’t yet fully understand)?

I started another topic on this… you need to use a frequency table to figure out the proper values to use… then you use the flat curve and it magically works with ringmod…

yep, tho you can achieve this sort of globally by using sends.

For example;

beat.wav on track 1

dsp chain on that particular track: send device 1 & send device 2 (use keep source) + a hydra device

set up 2 different effect chains on the 2 send tracks

Use the different sends ‘amount’ parameter in the hydra + flip one of those min & max values.

Set a one shot LFO to be the reverse of the decay of whatever instro. Put the LFO reset under control of an empty instrument’s velocity device. Copy the notes from the first instruments track and remap them to the empty instrument in the effected track.
use in combination with key track controlling the LFO frequency to give yourself more freedom in the decay department.
