Dual, Quad Core

edit: oh sorry. read that in a hurry… the spex were in your signature…

Hi again… had to do some testing with cubase before replying…

Tried that same patch you did on massive… and i get crackles even on one instance using Renoise 1.8. No crackles when I run the same patch on cubase however…

And the system should be well tuned as it can for use with ASIO stuff. Been building computers for use with cubase sx for 4 years and the system works flawlessly with Cubase and I’m able to run up to tens of VSTi’s on it using the same latency.

(and I’m using a latency of 2ms…)

Would be cool to figure out what is causing this on renoise though…

Perhaps this is something that us Athlon users experience?

Maybe it’s related to this?

I can use 10ms on my X-Fi until around 60% cpu usage, after that i have to switch to 20ms for cpu heavier projects. I don’t experience such drastic crackles like you have and i don’t own Massive, but i can run multiple instances of FM8 or Absynth 4 just fine. Of course not at 2ms with my X-Fi. ;)</0x0000562850636400>

Hi,

thanks for the idea but I don’t think it is caused by that. I’m Running a self built system with manually set cooling and quieting temperatures… Also running Cubase SX on the same latency settings is absolutely fine… (usually making music with it made this computer run alot hotter than now with renoise)

I however have been able to trace some stuff that relates to the crackling on my system. Some of it has something to do with the graphics…

The viewing of the pattern editor when playing causes more crackling than other views. And when changing to the mixer or sample view - it usually lowers the crackling.

Just to make sure what causes the really really bad crackling that sometimes seems to come from nowhere even on projects that other times usually run fine I’ll gotta do some more checking.

I’ll post back and try to get something reproduceable and see if something could be linked to this too…

my dualcore is randomly crashing renoise if i load track which has v-station or discovery or third else plugin inside (kunt now remember). also if i start a clean track and load sum ov those vstis, it just sometimes crash. 3 out ov 4 tries. but its funny:
there only come this windows send error report thingie. well, i CAN use renoise, play track or what its best, SAVE a track, BUT immediately when i hit button in error report dump window (dont send/send[doesnt matter]) renoise just kiil itself without error report or backups or anything else…and im quite sure it has sumthing to do with dualcore. ydin.

I just experimented with putting waves c4 plug-in on and off (by pressing enter button) and got it to crackle the whole project ocassionally. I got this by opening c4 from it’s sleeping state, and reproduced this by tapping the enter button (with the c4 plug-in selected in the mixer) about 50 times or so… Not sure if this is related to anything about dualcores, but looks like if plug-ins are put on from their off state might in some cases cause some serious crackling.

Anyone able to reproduce this?

tip: just tap the plug-in on and off like tens of times… might require some effort ;)</0x0000562854f038e0>

exactly the same behaviour here ever since i was using a HT-CPU (meanwhile also dualcore here), at least when it comes to songs using v-station.
it has definately something to do with the 2nd core and remember posting due that issue ages ago and if i remember correctly, taktik was unable to reproduce the crashes.

during the years i’ve learned to get used to that bug and i just load the respective songs multiple times, just until it finally works without crashing - once loaded properly, everything remains steady and stable.

to 029
my system 4200 x2 and i use lots of samples and vsts with 4ms latency
works great for whole project with ~20 traks and lots of vsti and vst effects, but it wouldnt be posible to do what if my sound card
wouldnt be ~0 latency capable, even if cpu usage 20%

so maybe cracles is not from renoise, it could be from sound card ?
but if it works with cubase - it a problem… maybe cubase use different asio drivers or something

I’ve experienced this too, and it has prevented me from using everything I’ve ever tried from Novation with just about every version (ever since 1.281). I had no idea that it was related to HT though, cool I guess.

keith303, ogge a…how you´re handling now with 1.9

as in my case, renoise doesnt have anymore these random crashes!!!
this is getting better and better everyday.
