I’m playing around with the demo to see if renoise is for me. So far i am amazed. So i have sliced a break applied an envelope to the slices, learned to do it the other way with note off and all that. I am now dabbling with the effect commands. So far so good.
So here’s the thing : how can i move from the note colum to the local fx colum fast. I don’t want to use the mouse. I want to move straight to it fast like using TAB to move from a track to another. Certainly there is a way to do that but i can’t seem to find it.
Also, when the effect command is entered it instantly shift me the to next line. Logically i would have thought that i would have be fowarded to the numerical values to the right of the effect command letter value?
Anyone got any input? I’m positive it’s in the manual but for the life of me i can’t find it.

That part is controlled by_step length_, and you can change that quickly with Ctrl + [0-9]

The quickest way to jump from any note column to any effect column (named “FX”) is to left click with the mouse.It is possible to make a function to use in a tool that jumps directly from one type of column to another, but it is not very practical, because you must have the tool selected if it is a window. Possibly, it can be integrated by means of a “hidden tool” through a new function to assign a new keyboard command, for example SHIFT more right; this would be practical.
Go to "Edit/Preferences/Keys/Pattern Editor/Navigation"Here you have all the navigation options inside the pattern editor. There is no specific option for keyboard command to do that, jump from a note column to an “fx” column.This is where the hidden tool could be integrated…
I do not know if there is a specific tool that has the possibility of inserting a command with that function. But it would not be strange at all.Anyway, I think I would be able to build the tool with a little time, if you desperately need this, after you decide to buy Renoise.

It is very difficult to control everything with the USB keyboard alone.And another thing. Do not forget that the community Share little by little newtools, which add very interesting functions for Renoise. New users enter in these forums once in a while and it seems that Renoise is alone, when it is not. Tools can help a lot in many specific cases.

You can set up a key command to move to next column. I set mine up using SHIFT + TAB.
If you want to enter effects commands without it jumping lines, then hold SHIFT and type in your value and it will input onto that line

Thanks for the long reply. Yes i see what tools are. I will try to make a custom keyboard shortcut. I don’t know why there is no shortcut for that navigation feature because it makes so much sens.
The main reason i want to learn renoise is to be able to make microedits like the one you find in glitch hop or breakcore in a faster fashion. I come from ableton and cubase. My production mostly consists of tons of audio snippets i cut off from long sound design samples i make or from drum loops i have designed. I then pitch manipulate or timestech them, manually draw pitch envelopes and render and so on and so forth. It works beautifully within ableton but it is a very tedious and long process. It’s far from being optimised for that purpose. I have to constantly zoom in and out to move stuff around, then go in the audio editor to draw the clip pitch data etc. You get the picture.
I have figured that if renoise is praised amongst the breakcore comunity is has to be faster for that type of work. I like what i’m learning so far. It’s alot easier than i expected.
@Laurent.Here are many users who use Renoise to compose any type of electronic music, any style.The two main virtues are that you can use samples (or loops) millimetrically and fast way and also VST / VSTi 2.0.In fact, the sample editor is quite advanced, more so than other sections of Renoise.
As simple as loading and ordering your instruments, sort and rename your tracks, and use the full navigation and editing potential of Renoise, using keyboard and mouse commands.But what I want to tell you here is that Renoise can be valid to compose any style of music. Some here we even go with the symphony orchestra. And yes, we use Renoise!
If you have no problem learning certain keyboard commands and some fast mouse actions for the matrix editor, you can compose songs of the style you want very quickly and also be very meticulous with the details.Also do not forget MIDI possibilities.
Another important detail. Maybe there are certain operations or things you want to do that Renoise does not do directly, but it is very likely that you can get it in several steps. In this sense it is very flexible.
Of course, if you have knowledge of the LUA language and the Renoise API, you can extend Renoise and customize your tools to your liking.
You look like the typical user profile that starts with Renoise (we have all gone through that period).It seems that most people who do not know Renoise tend to undervalue it, thinking that it is less than it really is and then they are surprised!Some then think they have been wasting time with other DAWs. The only barrier here is not to catch mania to the parameters of the tracker.All parameters are friendly and enjoyable, not enemies :lol:

I think it would be nice to mention another method, which is the note break, which works with the keyboard command:
Move between notes: CTRL + SHIFT + Next or CTRL + SHIFT + Prior :o
Move with EditStep: CTRL + SHIFT + Down or CTRL + SHIFT + Up

Includes master effect columns, NOT only note columns. I would guess this is the preferred behavior for most of us.
When in a sub column (vol/pan/dly/sample fx), “Jump to prev column” will jump to the current note column, NOT to the previous note column.

Thanks for the accurate shortcut names! i had never heard of “move to next row with note”. that’s so freakin cool. i guess there’s no API function call for that by default.

These are the first functions in main.lua
It has 4 jump modes, and the jump of a simple line. The Mode “step length” has the same behavior as Renoise’s line break, but it works with its own function (is the blue button). The Mode "note search"jump to the immediately lower note, otherwise, jump to the last line of the track pattern (is the pink button).There are two other random jump modes…
