[Fixed/buggy Plug?] Crash With Jonas' Mbc4 Song& Vst Troubles

Just had a crash, out of nothing,

Windows Vista, core2 duo, 4 gig ram, emu 0202 soundcard, using direct sound drivers (latency at 20ms at time of crash, usually I have it around 10 or less).

Looks like a soundcard driver issue?

With which song did this happened? Does it always happen if you load/play that song? If so, would you mind sending it to us?

Any info on how to replicate this would be very helpful, so that we can have a look at this here.

First time it happened, will work on it today and see if it is reproducable.

Browsed the log and I’ve seem to have had a similar crash earlier in another song using my emu’s asio drivers:

My system has been unstable for a while now (see crash log from this thread: Experiencing Slowdown In Renoise ) and I’ve been pushing my tracking sometimes beyond being able to playback the song realtime, kind of like blind tracking B), automating vst’s and hitting the 99% cpu. Because of the crashes I’m freezing tracks and that helps!

More crash. Opened up a work in progress song and immediately got a notice saying one of the plugins has crashed, namely: sp3ctr3 ( http://www.freewebs.com/st3pan0va/sp3ctr3.htm )

Than I either tried running a new empty song or closed down Renoise and got a program quitting crash…

Do you have hardware failure?

Like, sometimes, RAM or sectors on a HD can go bad. This can cause a slew of crazy problems. Maybe someone with the same OS as you can recommend a hardware and OS integrity testing app?

As an aside, when I google “RtlAnsiStringToUnicodeString” I end up on this page. When I Google for “EtwSendNotification” I end up here. When I google “xmlStringComment” I end up here.

These are the “first” keywords in your crashlogs. It’s pretty blind and useless speculation on my part, but my instinct is a corrupt Windows DLL?

On second thought, are you using non-english characters in your pattern names or song comments area?

Blind leading the blind here… Just trying few random stabs in the dark.

Scratch everything I wrote.

I can make your MBC4 track crash in the mysterious future (alpha). Something is up.

knocks wood haven’t had any (noticeable?) hardware failures, don’t see any exclamation marks in windows hardware configuration, though maybe bad drivers are the culprit here?

About a possible corrupt windows DLL:

I’ve had to install some windows packages, microsoft .NET framework to get Buzz working, probably paranoia, but maybe it has sabotaged mah Renoise :) , anyway…I see I have framework 3.5 sp1 installed and framework 4 client profile. Dunno if these two could conflict each other and it would be better deinstall the older 3.5? Will google. Also see I have two versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 installed (ATL update & redistributable) and three versions of C++ 2008 redistributable, seems logical to me I only need one?

I won’t be deinstalling or replacing dll’s soon as I’m afraid to completely bust my system before I finish my album this December.

Nope :) .

Strange, I stripped it of all the vst’s. I have used Mogue’s lbp conversion tool, like in almost all my latest tracks to increase the resolution and sometimes it gives me a notice about automation points being lost/outside the scope of a pattern. Like if I originally drew automation envelopes in a 64 length pattern, then changed the pattern length to 56, multiplied every pattern/lbp using his tool by two… that’s all I can think of atm.

The formula device has given a same kind of error/crash, and this has been fixed recently ( http://www.renoise.com/board/index.php?/topic/31739-fixed-crash-trying-to-load-xrns-with-magichidden-formula-device/page__p__249828__hl__c0000005__fromsearch__1#entry249828 ), might be related??

as far as theres no bsod, i would blame the plug.

no beta: “currently under development” … “0.2 alpha release (updated 14/8/06)”
… “PDC possibly implemented” (??? - not sure, heh?!)

and its not even available anymore - on the dev- site
maybe a project to learn the sdk.

but for those who want to try it:

Have made it crash too, by playing the song and, while running, changed the ticks per line from 6 to 12 and afterwards tried disabling the groove settings in the song settings as well, after disabling and quickly enabling Renoise crashed:

It is not a guaranteed way to get a crash immediately, after a couple of tries managed to crash again using groove disable/enable while having a higher tpl:

Jonas: groove seems to have nothing to do with this, but we found the and fixed the problem with your MBC4 track: Its the crazy “Signal Follower, Signal Follower -> Hydra, Meta” combo in track 1 which can cause this. Bad thing is that it sometimes will work, sometimes not, so it’s more or less randomly causing a crash or not. This also only happens when running the song with multiple CPUs enabled.

Regarding sp3ctr3:
It seems that the plugin indeed simply is buggy. This can break anything in Renoise. Only thing I can suggest is avoiding to use it in future, if it’s not longer developed and thus can’t be fixed.

Great to hear you’ve found the problem and have fixed this :drummer: :yeah: , I’ve been using the combo in almost all my tracks since the devices appeared.

The crash will only happen when using more than one signal follower in one track and only if those are connected (via a hydra or directly) to other tracks. Setting Audio CPUs to 1 will fix this for now for you - as an ugly workaround…

The setting to one core isn’t an option right now as I wouldn’t be able to play all these tracks with insufficient cpu. Will wait till the next update, cheers.
