I made a free Jack vst effect that now works with Renoise. This means FREE AUDIO IN FOR RENOISE ON OSX!!!111 heheh

Beware, it’s very temperamental and it’s in early early alpha stages, but if you follow the procedure below every time you use it (sorry, I don’t yet know how to make this simpler), then you shouldn’t (I make no guarantees) have a problem. If anyone wants the source code, just ask me. My email address is in the readme.txt file in the download.

(1)Firstly, install JackTools http://www.jackosx.com

(2)Then download my vst http://polynoise.sent.com/JackIn_vst.zip, extract and copy it to your vst plugins folder.

(3)Then set up and start the Jack server (there is extensive documentation that comes with Jack that I will not repeat here).

(4)Then boot Renoise, do whatever you do to compose music, save you work (don’t forget this), and then make an instance of the JackIn.vst plugin.

(5)Then, this is important, play a sample or something through the dsp chain you put JackIn into before you make any connections to the Jack server. Why? Because Renoise doesn’t start to call the process() method in a vst plug until some sound is played through it. The JackIn plug needs process() running before any connections are made. Otherwise, crashes may ensue.

(6)Finally, make some connections to your audio hardware/ other programs using Jack in JackPilot.

Easy, eh? Hope I didn’t scare you all off.

Now remember, this is alpha, but I’m putting it here because there have been a number of you osx using renoisers who have been pleading for audio in for some time (I know, I’m one of them). For all you windows users out there… sorry, this isn’t for you. I’m sure there are other ways.

Jack for OSX is absolutely new thing for me, I’m still reading the f******* manual. I’m glad because my favourite sequenser Logic Audio 6 seems to be Jack-enabled Core Audio application and if it really works with Renoise, I am more than happy.

I’m just beginning to understand the new possibilities! Damn, I’m so glad to be a Mac user.

About your vst effect, how does it work actually? I see it in the effect list, I can boot it but there are no programs available(??).

It does a similar job to the Jack-insert VST effect that comes with JackTools, only this time it works with Renoise. I had to write one because Renoise is slightly more picky about how uses VST plug-ins, and the original Jack-insert VST effect does not co-operate in Renoise as it does in other hosts.

Have a read of the documentation and look up how to use the Jack-insert VST plugin. My plug operates in a similar way. Also, be sure to follow the instructions in the readme file.

In future, if you could post feedback/questions to this thread I would be most grateful. This current thread is just for announcing new free vsts.

Just in case you missed it:

A Winamp plugin for hosting VST plugins.
I found myself actually using it. You can also put a multiFX VST and have a chain of VST effects. Nice!

That plugin is from the creator of posihfopit(tip: check the Akai-ish skin on the 2nd page), which was also released as a payware version, Electri-Q.

Just letting you know that is ‘just’ been released what some people claim is the best sounding software EQ, PLParEQ from Refined Audiometrics Laboratory. Together with the 1000$ 10-band version, there’s also a 3-band freebie.
