Having trouble Live playing Midi Drums

Hi All,

Brand new to renoise, but would like to use it to play drum samples live.

I have imported a .sfz file which describes my drum kit, and all my drum samples are loaded fine and I can play via the keyboard.

I would like the samples to be played via midi. I have my drum hardware issuing a c-3 note every second as a test. I can see these coming in on the midi

monitor, but no sounds are being played.

What is the simplest way to connect the midi notes to the samples, so that I can play live. I am not interested at this stage of recording …

EDIT: By the way, running the demo version. I want to evaluate how well drums work before I buy …

EDIT2: It seems my samples are set 1 octave below my midi commands, when I lined them up it was fine.

By the way, how do I do a custom mapping between the midi notes and the sample notes …

if you can find the keyzone editor, you can drag the samples to the notes you want to trigger them…

Thanks, but that is a right pain to do that for a kit that has many samples (>500 in my case, my drums have many layers)

I tried to create a zone out of each sample, but get this error:

Failed to create a drum-kit: Up to 84 samples can be mapped with the current drum-kit settings, but the instrument has 506 samples.

Try choosing a lower base-note in the drum kit settings or remove some samples to be able to use a drum-kit mapping.

These kits are “Analog Drum” vintage kits, and I want to have several loaded at a time, so I can select between them live …

By the way, if I have incoming midi notes at B-2 and F-3, they end up on the grid as B-1 under C-1 octave and F-2 under C-2 octave … very confusing.

I thought midi note B-2 was B in the 2nd octave, and F-3 was F in the 3rd octave …

Most drum kits send midi notes starting at C-3 (36 decimal) … renoise mapping doesn’t make sense to me, it doesn’t seem to comply to the standard midi note chart …

When reworking the instrument keyzones, it’s not a question of switching to “drumkit” layout. This type of layout is a simple auto-generated one which will assign one sample to each key, according to the selected options.

No, what you probably want to do is to select all samples (“CMD/CTRL+A”) and then drag them one octave. This should do the trick.

Note also that here, a small annoyance exist in Renoise: before dragging, you might struggle a bit to find a spot which is actually draggable. This spot would be the highlighted sample.

In the MIDI world, it’s just numbers. And different DAWs have different ideas about where the middle octave sits.So sorry, no real standard there.

But, if there really isn’t a transpose option for your controller and you can’t be bothered to rework the instrument then tools and plugins exist which let you rewrite the incoming MIDI messages on the fly. For example, you could run your controller through an instance of xRules or launch a MIDI plugin (such as this or this).

My MIDI controller is my own design, so I can map the midi numbers to whatever I like.

However, I am pulling in drum kits from all over … MOST base the kits off 64 (C-3) so I don’t have to change the key assignments between kits …

What is CMD? I am on a Linux machine, I tried the “Windoze” key and the ALT key … do all keys need to be pressed at once.

Not really… it’s “either or” : either you change the instrument itself or you adjust the notes sent by the controller.
Changing the instrument is not really an optimal solution, would be better to quickly transpose the controller to match.

A third - but as of yet unrealized - solution would be to stick in a tool between the controller and the instrument, letting you re-assign pads and map samples on the fly.

This is technically possible using my tool xRules, but the workflow is not streamlined - to the point where you wouldn’t want to use this approach (too much hassle with changing mapping, loading and saving configurations).

So I’ve been thinking of a dumped-down, simplified version which would work great for (especially) drum-pads. The idea was spawned by this thread, which deals with a similar question to yours:

Ehrm, no idea. I guess you’ll have to share one the kits, so we can take a look?

And regarding CMD/CTRL, this is really just my “OS neutral” way of saying CTRL, because OSX does it differently…so yeah, just “select all samples”.

Well that depend on your interpretation of “focus”. If I highlight all notes/samples with CTRL-A, then my assumption is that the whole lot is “in focus”, but that does not seem to be the case, as I can’t just drag the selected block, by clicking anywhere on one of the samples/notes …

I have tried clicking on one sample/note , then highlighting the lot and trying to drag the initial clicks item, that does not work either …

  1. Select them all using the CMD/CTRL+A shortcut
  2. Mouse over the sample that is_highlighted._ Only then will the drag-cursor appear.
  3. Drag to wherever you want

Ok, I will be clearer …

  1. I see all my instruments/drums/samples in the keyzone editor page.

  2. I press CTRL-A and they are all highlighted as expected.

  3. I hover over the highlighted instruments and the cursor does NOT change (I have never seen a grab cursor EVER)

  4. I try to drag and click left mouse button, and it just un-selects the instruments.

Have you tried this on a Linux box lately?

Regarding the 5-times issue, it is still there. I am using Big Mono from the Analog Drums selection. I have a .sfz file I can attach if I can work out how …

Let me rephrase this:

  1. Select them all using the CMD/CTRL+A shortcut
  2. Mouse over the sample that is_highlighted._ Only then will the drag-cursor appear.
  3. Drag to wherever you want

Did you solve the “need to press 5 times to hear a beep” issue?

Ah, got it!, you missed a step.

Step 0. Select one of the samples, so that you get the 4 arrows. Only** Then** do 1…3

That was what I was missing. It’s not a very obvious bit of UI.

A better UI would be if the user did a CTRL-A then the whole area of the samples should be bounded and have 4 arrows, then just drag the lot. I.E. No step 0 … and you could grab it anywhere in the highlighted area, instead of trying to find the original sample and grabbing that, which could be small.

EDIT: I also notice that when I do move the block of samples (in my case ~250) the move takes about 10 seconds from the time of moving the mouse to the new location … very slow, and very hard to line up because of the large lag …
