I am proud of all of you who have submitted a track so far. Youā€™ve all done splendid stuff with the limitations.

@corb oh, that is an excellent track. I like the bass sound. The stereo imaging feels weird, not a bad kind of weird, just different. I like how you switch things up after the breakdown. Neat stuff!

@highway_rehab I am surprised at the beautiful sounds youā€™ve managed to squeeze into 1.4mb. Lovely stuff, very diverse.

@t35513r big sounds and long, lingering melancholic notes. Thatā€™s my kind cup of tea alright! That last part is going pretty Venetian Snares on us, very nice!!

@Lneheb That is some neat sound youā€™ve got there. It does indeed feel like the earth is shifting and moving, telling a story. Cool!

@slur I didnā€™t have the impression that your track needed much fixing. But this sounds great! There is a sound in there that feels to me like a monkey ooh, ooh-ing at me. Probably a space monkey by the sound of it. Trippy stuff, well done sir!

Tomorrow is the deadline. I was gonna remind everyone last week but I didnā€™t. :grimacing: So Iā€™m extending the deadline by a week. Just in case someone is still working on this. Or wants to join, youā€™ve got a week. Go for it!

New deadline:
Sunday February 11th, 2024 Hawaii Standard Time.

Iā€™m impressed by the tracks posted here, very nice!

Here is my entry, around 86 % :

Iā€™ve made this track in a simple way, with not too long samples, and downsampled and shortened again the samples to fit the size (from 450% to 86%).

That is a lovely little tune @fabrice! Giving me strong Daft Punk vibes. Especially due to the dark, lo-fi sound. Thatā€™s totally something the would use for passages. So I was kind of half expecting your tune to open up in a similar way. Just cranking up an EQ and the exciter, so to say. Think it would benefit from that. Musically this is really sweet though. Well done indeed!

Yeah true I was blocked for a better rendering. Quite hesitating on the EQ and things like that.
Iā€™m all ears open for advices. Maybe Iā€™ll make another try but I also like this simple sounding.

How come youā€™re hesitating on using the EQ.

I did a really quick and dirty ā€œremasterā€. Did a little bit of automation, turning it on/off to flow with the tune. But didnā€™t spend any time tweaking the settings. First impression is good enough to get my point across. Have a listen, I think it sounds a lot more lively this way. But thatā€™s just my opinion, of course. How do you feel about what I did to your track?

Ah yes, interresting! :+1:
Iā€™ll make a try, dealing with these parameters soon.
I would remove the global exciter, a bit too much for my taste, but the EQ make the sound more clear for sure. Global stereo expansion work nice for this case with samples only and maximizer seems going good too. Ok ok letā€™s learn a bit.

Yeah, the exciter if definitely way too present right now. But like I said, it was more to get the point across than to do a proper mastering job. Iā€™m looking forward to hear what youā€™ll do with it!

Alrightā€¦

literally a single byte to spare lol.

ā€¦and im still not entirely happy with it lol. but was fun! Thats what matters. I loved the idea, and loved making this track. Also loving all of yours. learned some things, as well.

I used some samples from a resource pack found on the renoise forums. one sample from a educational video about nuclear fallout. baked some stuff into pies, and I also sampled a fractal.
thereā€™s more info in the song comments describing each instrument.

An idea for another thread: ā€œMix my songā€.

Iā€™ve made a quick mix for you, check this out:

Thereā€™s no native monoizer in Renoise, so the low ends are still stereo. But besides of that itā€™s much better in terms of balance and clearness in comparison to the original mix imho.

I think youā€™ve chosen the sounds already that good that it barely needs any eqing. Maybe I would only kind of ā€œlimitingā€ the frequency range of the lead and basses, like so (lead):

So a still a wide area, only removing a tad of not required frequencies, and then compensating with a bit more gain then. Your leads certainly would shine more then, but without any resonances or phase issues (a 12dB shelve filter does not alter the phase at all, while highpass filters do, and since you are layering a lot I would assume the keeping the phase is very important here). And the layered bass could sound a bit less muddy. Cutting off the unnecessary parts works very well while listening in mono, since there you only have the frequency range (y-axis) to place sounds.

At the same time, again, I find your mix very good already, and it is also part of the style the you mash up wide frequency layers like this. If you somehow would put also a limiter on master and maybe on d+b bus, or doing a bit of low frequency ducking on the bass while the kick is playingā€¦ Such technics would give you more loudness, and ducking also can make it sound more dynamical, which I think always sounds better. Also full band limiters of course first limit the bass range, since bass has way more energy.

But what do I know, very nice tunes here again. Very interesting to listen to and see how you work. Thanks for sharing. :+1:

Actually maybe I do not remember correctly which filter type will affect the phase and which one not, or lessā€¦ At least the 12db shelves in Renoise eq seem to be minimal invasive, but maybe a wide butterworth bandpass would work, too?

@TNT Very interesting! Sounds really different from the original, super clear with punch. Not far from a remix at this point! A remaster for sure.
There is so many layers beside of the master track! :open_mouth: Iā€™ll took the time to see.

Yes ^^ But itā€™s possible here because itā€™s all native with no VST so itā€™s super easy to share files.

@ffx Thanks for explanations, Iā€™ll check the frequencies. Probably Iā€™ll remove some too low frequencies. Also I wonā€™t change all the sounding at this point, anyway donā€™t have the time. ^^ Iā€™m okay with the global mix, but need just a bit of more punch and clearness. Iā€™ll do some tests.

Thanks everyone! Now letā€™s wonā€™t flood the tread with all mastering discutions. Iā€™ll see what I can do with all advices for a remaster!

Looking forward to other entries!

Yeah, thereā€™s a thread for mixing and mastering questions, no need to discuss it here.
But itā€™s not a remix, itā€™s just a mix. Your mix was almost good, you just need to cut the low ends in every track except the desired bassy parts like kick and bass, cut the treble at 10000 Hz to avoid harshness when turning up the volume and separate the instruments a little more. And never ever cut all the low ends in terms of a bass. Iā€™ve noticed a slight crackle in my mix at the beginning when the chords begin to play, thatā€™s because the lower mids of those chords arenā€™t perfectly aligned yet. As I said, quick mix. So thereā€™s some work left to do.

It looks more than it actually is. Itā€™s just the parallel processing stuff, in this case with native Renoise devices. That gives the sound more depth, ā€œwhoompā€ and a better balance. You also gotta check the sends in the instrument tracks. In case you want to know more or if thereā€™s a question, letā€™s switch to the mixing thread.

Just a quick overview and explanation:

Maybe just forget what I wrote above, might be nonsense, too
Yes, keep it like that. I tried a bit with shelves, but couldnā€™t mix it better then, as it looses those nice dynamics in the low end:
