Haha I’m not even sure you can get away with that!!

I’m trying hard to postpone the review/vote thing until the votepack arrives. Will hack some lua in the meantime.

Yo encrypted that’s a pretty cool writeup on your processes. Am I right in saying you’re basically just resampling through hardware repeatedly with an input signal barely brushing into the red?

Also the part about non-linear EQ causing phase artifacts is pretty cool. To my knowledge you can only really get this sort of thing with really steep cuts and notches and zero latency. Again, are you just resampling through an EQ set up this way multiple times until the artifacts become noticeable?

@TwoThreeZero, it’s actually a combination of the various methods and not necessarily repeating one process in a cyclic fashion. For instance if I have a compression effect overall that gives me the levelling I like, I stop at that. You can use parallel compression on the entire track too, so that is an option. I also like to mix and match different compressors types. Opto types have a memory effect since they have luminated panels that glow long after they are powered off and that affects the compression times and overall effect. In fact even if you dial in the attack and release times on a unit the internal circuits still further affect the release times and hence requires some experimentation. In the digital domain, the Waves Rennassaisance Compressor is a very good emulation and the sound changes are not linear in that predictable sense and you can get different bass and drum sounds just by increasing or decreasing the threshold value or switching between the compression modes like analog or opto.

Regarding EQ, stereo is kindof like two different signals of the same source which when combined give the human ear a spatial illusion or effect. You can apply different curves for each channel and isolate them individually and then recombine them. The waves paragraph of EQ has this curve split feature if you want to do it digitally. In the hardware route you already have that L/R splits so you can play with it in anyway you want as the channels are split from the outset.

There is a point of diminishing returns though, it’s very easy to get a muddled end mix and hence a little goes a long way. Another phenomenon that occurs even when adding distortion or analogue FX is masking, where spatially arranged sounds of similar frequency range occupying instruments mask each other spectrally and hence further reduce definition, however during mixing distortion can actually bring an instrument to the foreground and make it cut through. This can be an intended effect but it all depends on the production direction. Distortion adds further harmonics to the spectrum and hence it’s use on an entire mix must be carefully and tastefully done. Another tool is an exciter, Renoise has one, and I also use a few others if and when required for a particular feature like locking bass and drums and then boosting them uniformly.Yet another thing I do sometimes is pass a mix or a stem group through the FX in another software. I bounce parts or a mix and feed it to my Caustic FX processors on my phone for their rather gritty sound. One more thing I observed is that if the initial mix stands on its own then degrading it does not remove the character of the song, but rather enhances aspects of it. So you still need to spend time mixing the tracks properly, at least in my experience.

Btw I really enjoyed reading your mini reviews while listening to the entire playlist this afternoon, some were really funny that got me chuckling every now and then, big up for your efforts:)

@ulrikkold: You are welcome :))

Voting pack is here and been listening to the whole playlist and it’s just awesome really, good variety and strong productions

Remind us what the voting deadline is, please.

Good call.

Participants who don’t vote in this thread before December 16th are disqualified.

I’ll be pestering via private messageson Thursdayto remind people.

FUCK YAH - Time to give each of these a listen and a bit of a review :walkman:

Big ups to everyone involved. Great chunk of tunes from what I have skimmed so far.

Thanks to everyone doing reviews as well. :clownstep:

Can I crowdsource an opinion on what kind of bonus I’m supposed to give for an XRNI? Weird case. Currently it’s no bonus. Should I be more flexible?

Well done to everyone who entered - so gutted I didn’t manage to complete something in time.

My top 3 are:

$$± P‡B‡F ±$$ — BalkFriday

Hanz Meyzer Lab — The Shit

Msymiakos — Tribute To Mutant Breaks

With noteable hats off mentions to

user3315860525 — jyu

21 Esters — Aerothetic

James Britt — “Resistor” James Britt / Neurogami

and Mars64 who kills it every year… its not fair

Looking forward the ceremony!

  • denotes my votes

Mars64 - UnqualifiedSuccess - cold, chilled strings and mellow focus giving way to disillusioned political commentary. Importantly, the sparse arrangement gives room to feelings … and perhaps action.

encryptedmind - In Memoriam : like a hip hop instrumental, it lives through the (hand-played?) syncopated bass & beats variation of carefully balanced elements entering and leaving the mix. instant feels for this track!

Sam aka Wrong - Know Dat : like is often the case with mr. wrong, this is an extremely transparent mix. the track offers a fresh perspective on a bunch of familiar sounds, but does not go the extra mile to really pull me in

Vaeprism - Decagon : this track embraces the concept most fully, common denominator groove? I feel the wobble is locking the groove a bit too forcefully though… with so many other interesting elements around it seems a bit like a missed opportunity

ulrikkold aka Coolium - Mikrohouse : starting out with minimal audio alchemy, a bit like early pansonic, but slowly assembling itself into a more human form. I felt the track should have returned to the middle part before exiting the stage. Perhaps I was expecting too much of a traditional arrangement

TheBellows - Holy Shit : always the one to experiment with form and genre. For a d&b track, the drums are strangely weak tho… a pity, because they could have made the impact so much greater. But you’re excused my friend - it’s crazy hard to mix such strong melodies and rhythm!

Robodub - Octo Man And His Ash : OK, have to admit that the title made me expect something special. And boy, does it deliver!

This is equal parts the soundtrack of a platform game, and a banging tune played in the dimly lit back room of that club you weren’t sure if you wanted to pay a visit to in the first place.

Raegae - ShittyDub : Forget perfect execution! This is what a real jam-session sounds like. Again, my desire for traditional song-writing makes me wish that a different part would enter around 1:30. And also, that someone would change preset on that drummer every now and then

*** powieff aka acodreon - sith tit shit shit blow my whistle bitx0E** : BOOM crunch …. d-d-d-d-d-rillllll… Dap Dap @£$ drooooone. moB / Boom x@$

This is an amazing journey into sound. Like with abstract painting, it’s basically up to you to stay focused, get something out of it, hate or love it.

I love it

James Britt aka neurogami - : right after the sonic onslaught that was powieff, my ears are thoroughly cleansed and ready for the distinctive timbres and elegant polyrhythmics that neurogami offers. The moment at the 1:24 mark gave me goosebumps! And while the whole song is short, it’s not too short.

Land Of Bits - Mutant Glitch Shit : amazing production values, and a strong melody to boot - maybe that is also why I take a sardonic pleasure at the end, where you are corrupting this perfect creation with glitches and bringing it down? what a luxury to be able to see the whole process on youtube

Komu - The Bouncer : ooh yeah, I’m a sucker for the opening of this tune. the droning electric bass along with that relentless slow beat. a tune for our day and age. And then it starts singing…

Kommandotolken aka Xkernel - Max Masterad : I’m not a dream. I’m the kind of d&b that makes you go into a twisted frenzy on the dancefloor!

really love how the elements are so downplayed… and that slowdown, taking a cue from the early 90s stab? great stuff

Garf aka Garfferen - Mutant X : elastic chip funk, heavy on teh staccato - almost like it’s going in reverse, it starts with intense energy and strips down, only to return with something resembling a melody. too short!

Djeroek aka Jonas78 - vergeten : ohh, we’re touching elements of multiple genres here - I hear fragments of jungle, boom-bap and highlife all put through jonas’ unique blender. it established itself slowly in my mind - once the tune was done, I felt like rewinding and hearing it all over

*** deadhorse - dead575glitch2** : where are we? sounds like monsoon season is paid an unexpected visit by a big hulking spaceship. Establishing a channel of communication between cultures via the universal means of melody and rhythm. And as I was writing this, 2:40 happened!

glixxando/pump models : apparently, a national anthem?

Edit: final mix somehow slipped out of the votepack, but you can grab it hereor from soundcloud.

Crash_Noise_Division - Shitstorm : sometimes, a buildup leads to disappointment. NOT the case here, the intro is indeed necessary to prepare your senses to what comes. And the way that the theme from the intro then makes its back into, and brings some sense of order to the chaos is no less than astounding. Really amazing track

21testers - Aerothetic : it’s obvious from the moment the track starts that this is aphex twin, innit? these vibes aren’t something you just happen to create, so I’ll just with that theory. I love how the melody works in two layers, the background is sort of echoing what is going on in the foreground (or is it vice-versa?). beautiful, childish and intriguing all at the same time

J-qak aka Kosmonaut - Ten Years Today : the metal hymn to MBC that we all deserve: TEN YEARS TODAY!!! the wall-to-wall production almost manages to drown out the vocals, but pulls it off. It’s funny how I was expecting something completely different before the track took off

TwoThreeZero - JYU : rarely have I heard a track that so strongly evokes glacial images, including that impossible-to-describe sound when you throw ice upon a frozen lake. That alone made my ears stand out, and luckily the sparse arrangement makes it possible to take in these amazing sounds in full effect. A master class in sound design, and a wonderful track to boot

Head For Hills - Ultraviolet : still stuck in the cold open plains, this song plays out like a zombie apocalypse in a frozen wasteland. to me, it’s a bit too much of a sketch and not a fully realized song in itself

HeartBeatHero - Putcha Hey! : oooh, Hey! it’s that stab again. Wonder what happens if we cue this up after kommandotolken? Rock solid beat and a warm low/mid end makes me ears thaw after the coldness of those last two songs. Now, where’s the extended version for the 12” ?

eee_9250 - mbc : my tracklist seems to have a life of its own, because this seems a good fit for the song above. More of a laid-back feel but sharing a similar aesthetic and ingredients (stab + drum machine + vocals). I love how this track is swimming in its own sounds, and allowing each one to have a shot at being the star.

BasicMethods - 2017_deep_ : This track caught my ears when it was posted on soundcloud, really interesting hybrid of elements and genres. Favourite part is how it breaks down mid-track and then starts over, but not in a hurry because it’s always where it wants to be. And then the bass drops…

Only complaint: that awesome bass isn’t featured more than once.

Bean Machine - Insecticide Shower : my headphones transport me straight into the insects nest - swarming around me, choreographed to a massive blasting beat. The mood is the same impersonal one that also artists like Richard Device conjures - and with the same meticulous attention to detail.

I like how the track tilts into an acid bath near the end. infestation over?

ffx aka Hanz Meyzer - The Shit ][ : the track kicks off in full tempo, but somewhere behind the frenzied d&b beat there is a beautiful song hiding (think ulrich schnauss). sort of makes me wonder how this would feel with the drums all reworked, remix material?

  • PBF - BalkFriday : holy shit - I had to play this track the other night to a friend who’s completely into gabber. Not sure if that’s what this track is, or even where that genre stands in 2017 - but I friggin’ love the energy on display here. Plenty of dips and drops and whatnot to sustain the interest throughout.

EatMe - Another Backup Reminder : eatme lets it out, warm and loose, with nicely rounded fuzzy sounds. It gets going for a while but then, well, doesn’t really have an ending?! Maybe that’s the point - endless track

dfast - hunger : this gotta be the teaser for a fully fleshed out track, yeah? certainly has the block rockin beats and, well pretty much everything going for it…

Burital - MBC10 : the way this track starts is just perfect for some dj kicks. once it gets going, the dab-dab bass from the beginning soon goes away. I immediately missed it (cuz it’s awesome), but then it makes a re-entry a later on. yeah!

stailer - ten for eternity : the arp theme at the beginning of this track is crazy epic. And I mean before the vocal and instrumental parts sets in. I don’t know what it reminds me of, but it tickles something deep down (the orchestral part, not so much). Also impressed by the creative use of synth for drums.

00.1 - 20171114 Tue Mb10 : So, when are you going to make that film soundtrack? Because, here is another song from you that evokes powerful feelings, has “moments” (yeah, I’m thinking of that occasional evil synth sweep!) and plays with the room and ambience. it’s awesome.

BotB aka vivace - allmyidolsaredeadandmyenemiesareinpower : return of the botb!! and very much in style - stripped down, but all the more powerful because of this. really impressed by how tight it all sounds, without being locked down to a grid. And crazy good with the encore at 2:50.

sokoban - can_you_feel_the_shit : Yes I feel it. Boy, ST-01 never sounded this good. We need more tracks with vocals, even if all they do it to throw shit at us. Art imitates life and all that … crap

Redman - Air : instant sci-fi atmos. Not just because… well you did choose a picture from Gravity for the youtube page. But there is a strong sense of flow and time passing and all these elements together are just damn suitable as a score. After the 4:00 mark my attention wanes.

hyperunknown - High off the ground : how high can you get? anyone familiar with the more “pop” jungle & db will get lifted up high by this one. It’s not really my cup of tea but I appreciate the choice of sounds, you can almost feel the flow of fresh air through the speakers

Msymiakos - Tribute To Mutant Breaks : it’s time for the credits - mr.msymiakos’s tribute is true school, tasteful breaks, sweeping nostalgic pads, zenlike placement of silence and oh, the bass that happily bounces around the whole place and makes you want to get out your seat and get stepping (he does it again!)

That was awesome!

Been a while since I’ve listened so closely to music for hours on end :walkman:

Absolutely loved spending the day listening to each of these. Great tunes by all and mad respect for everyone involved. Was insanely hard widdling this down to just 3 choices. Probably had a solid 15 in my “short” list.

Renoise for life!

Haha I’m not even sure you can get away with that!!

I’m trying hard to postpone the review/vote thing until the votepack arrives. Will hack some lua in the meantime.

And then, :walkman: :walkman: :walkman:

I did this, because I really like your song and also really cannot judge in a constructive way about the dnb tunes in here. I tried to make my little song sounding like dnb, but failed (maybe I should have used another genre instead). It is not meant as an offense, but when I hear an amen beat, I am quickly feeling sick, finding the sample itself so ugly already. I also wonder a lot about the genre dnb, either it sounds too boring or too harsh and statical to me (that said I loved some triphop and breakbeat tunes from middle 90s). It is like it is, I cannot judge about it in an unbiased way. So I restricted myself to your song, which is not dnb. Of course you can not count my vote, it is not really fair to do so.

@ Danoise, thanks for reminding me
that part of being a musician
is mastering the art of evocation.

  1. Djeroek aka Jonas78 - Jonas78 - vergeten (My books version - 102 bpm)
I enjoyed the creative stereo play.

  2. TwoThreeZero - JYU
Nice balanced mix and I like the pace and tempo.

  3. ulrikkold aka Coolium - Mikrohouse
Ok, so this is a weird one.
I’ve been polyphasic sleeping and that sample
of the lady going “woo”, the overall minimalist composition,
and the “mindful of danger” tone is something
I probably loop in my naps.

Almost forgot to say thanks
to Conner and all participants.
This is a great tradition.

Short reviews (song names are vote pack file names):

00.1 - 20171114 Tue Mb10 - Really love the atmosphere! I feel like I’m in gray but modern dystopian city ruled by dark caped military with gas masks.

21testers - Aerothetic - The song is jocuralry fresh and subtle with unexpected changes. I could listen to this while chillin&relaxin. And I guess I will.

BasicMethods - 2017_deep_ - The bass part in the middle is soo good to listen. Overall good rhythm.

Bean Machine - Insecticide Shower - I didn’t know what to expect from the intro, but was pleasantly surprised tbh. I enjoy the fast-paceness of the song. Love the ending, acid is forever plus it nicely encapsulates the whole insect theme.

BotB aka vivace - allmyidolsaredeadandmyenemiesareinpower - This actually had me headbanging with people around me in night train. Kind of reminds me of LP Thousand Suns album, Wretches and Kings song, but more bassy and breaky!

Burital - MBC10 - This song should have played first, it feels like an intro for this whole compo. For the second half I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the carefree DnB pace, feels really nice.

Crash_Noise_Division-Shitstorm_Mutant_Breaks_10 - I love how the main part crashes on me, mutants just broke loose! I am 100 % sure I won’t hear more cymbals, crashes, hihats, chinas and rides in the playlist than in this song.

danoise aka glixxando - Pump models - The world is suddenly a better place. Everyone is happy. Everyone feels like they’ve acomplished all they ever wanted and can finally live in peace and everlasting happiness. Prescibe this instead of xanax with better results!

deadhorse - dead575glitch2 - The song is like bitcoin, totally unexpected what will come next, drops heavily, but gives back. So packed with different emotions. Also, I had to turn around few times, because I felt like someone is behind me all the time, great ambience.

dfast - mbcx-hunger - This pumped a lot of energy to me. I enjoy a lot the combination of bass, textures and classic DnB. And that random scatta.

Djeroek aka Jonas78 - Jonas78 - vergeten (My noons version - 102 bpm) - Got me in really chillin mood! Those breaks are unbeatable and fits really great with the subtle melody.

EatMe - Another Backup Reminder - I will surely backup everything after listening to this. Love the funky atmosphere with almost jazz like bass, fits great with those breaks.

eee_9250 - mbc - I’m glad I finally hear some trap hats! That synth panning effect is mezmerizing; in a good way. Nice variation in the second half.

encryptedmind - In Memoriam (Lucid 6AM Mix) - Really sets the mood well. That chill kind of mood, full of calmness. I’m fan of this lofi hop stuff, there wasn’t any boring part, good listening.

ffx aka Hanz Meyzer - The Shit ][ - So full of energy! I would say best mastering so far, feels really good to listen. Nice melodies and superb breaks!

Garf aka Garfferen - Mutant X - Very danceable rhythm with lots of interesting variations. I love the bass work, enjoyed a lot.

Head For Hills - Ultraviolet - Really atmospheric, the textures are unbeatable. Got my mind into some dystopian futuristic neon city. Enjoyed a lot!

HeartBeatHero - Putcha Hey! - The song is so optimistic, siphons good mood to everybody’s mind. Should really play on some summer carnival or something. Don’t worry, I putchd my hands in the air.

hyperunknown - High off the ground - I feel like driving hyperspeed racing hovercraft. But slowed to refill once a while. Fresh song!

J-qak aka Kosmonaut - Ten Years Today - Wtf, this song got too personal for someone. Oh wait, it’s mine. Funny thing is I started the song as Prodigy-style beat, but with all the guitars it quickly fell into metal thing, which isn’t a coincidence since I had metalcore band for few years.

Kommandotolken aka Xkernel - Max Masterad - Oh, painful consciousness. The beat gets so furious sometimes! But I especially love the synth in the second half. I’m glad this wansn’t a dream.

Komu - The Bouncer - I love the introduction. Whole song is so retrowave! MUCH AESTHETIC!I think I love everything about this song. Really interesting bass line, nice progression, the beat is subtle but pumps great. Love the vocal melody.

Land of Bits - Mutant Glitch Shit - Type-A - Euphoric melodies! Enjoy the bass, can imagine having it on max volume in my car, riding summer streets in small south europian city. You know, if I had a car. And lived in south europe. But I feel the vibes. Glithes stopped the song from being repetitive, which since I love the melody wouldn’t even mind tbh.

Mars64 - UnqualifiedSuccess-MutantBreaks-010 - This feels like a view from the end of the world. I think I never heard such original connection of politics and breakbeat. Why does it even feels so depressing? But so good to listen at the same time.

Msymiakos - Tribute To Mutant Breaks - I’m in a game! Mutant Breaks game. Nice bass work. I normally don’t enjoy those child-like short vocals, but it playfully fits here, making the beat even more interesting. Breaks are strong with this one.

Neurogami - Mutant_Breaks_10_Master - Got me dancing, even while lying on couch. So funky! Interesting atonal bell-like sounds in the background, feels so original. The baseline is awesome, main reason for the funkiness, I guess.

PBF - BalkFriday - I’m completly in love with this. Guess I’m that type of guy. Got my mind into some Belgian Hardcore festival and pumped MDMA in my bloodstream. It’s your fault if I’ll get dehydrated! I especially love the typical gabber bass, made so original by overall song composition, horror textures and low-samplerate voices. Also:

XX5dhir.jpg

powieff aka acodreon - sith tit shit shit blow my whistle bitx0E - Interesting background lofiness. I feel like I’m in Ostrava steel foundries, with all that thick black smoke and glowing molten metal around. At the end I realized the overall lofi atmosphere is why i love this song. Not a single hifi bit lololol!

Raegae - ShittyDub - Quite a heartbeat! Raced right through me. Shines like million. I enjoy this song a lot! The rhythm sounds so natural with the guitar. It’s so rasta it levitated my Eagle Bill’s Shake’n’Vape across the room right to me!

Redman - Air - Nice spaceship theme! But not a Star Wars one, more like USG Ishimura before its destruction. Or more like peaceful view from Ceres station. I’m a fan of this a lot! Will definetly listen again many times.

Robodub - Octo Man And His Ash - I fear Octo Man reduced my samplerate to bare minimum! Those low samplerate effects present in whole song make this fun to listen. Didn’t expect the funkiness in the last third!

Sam aka Wrong - Know Dat - Original composition, interesting changes of beat and nonbeat parts. Superb breaks. The bass synth sounds great! Pad in the last part calms the song a lot, giving the song some kind of story with uncertain beginning and happy ending.

sokoban - can_you_feel_the_shit - You just hit the brown note! I’m sure this song got as close to the shit theme as humanly possible. Why is the song trying to sissyfy me? But it’s fun to listen, happy tune.

stailer - Ten For Eternity (feat eSoreni) - Beatiful vocals! Awesome spectrum of melodies, instruments, synth sounds and distortion effects. Cinematic quality stuff!

TheBellows - Holy Shit - I’m a real fan of the wobble bass. I can feel it wiggling my trichomes! The wobbling bass rhythm makes the song so much interesting and danceable. There wasn’t any part I wouldn’t like. I especially love the story of the song, changing of quiet and frantic breaks parts and overall composition.

TwoThreeZero - JYU - Interesting vocoder-like synth throughout song. The glitching is not hard on ears, which makes the song even more enjoyable to listen. The ending glitch is just superb! Will definetly come back to this! Mind in pieces, glad the last few seconds put it back.

ulrikkold aka Coolium - Mikrohouse - Wow, this is so … nano! Definition of originality. Why I dishes clanking in the background? Creates good atmosphere for this microminimalism. The synth sounds are interesting a lot. This was fun to listen!

ΔBįSƧȔš ṼØȊÐƎ aka Vaeprism - Decagon-Mutant_Breaks10_Vaeprism - Wobbles for life! I’m addicted to that background bell-like clank. Interesting spectrum of synth sounds, can’t wait to dig into source. Nice time-signature! The number ten theme makes the song really original.

P.S.: Yesterday I accidentaly fell asleep with headphones with Pump Models on repeat. I woke up and now my world genuinely looks like this:

Thanks to Conner_Bw for organization, Djeroek for samplepack, Renoise team for awesome tracker and anyone else who participated.

Hi all,

My votes in no particular order:

  • Sonic Deadhorse

  • 21Esters

  • TwoThreeZero

And the runners up:

  • Wrong

  • Jonas78

  • Msymiakos

Like other people I have had a hard time voting, there are many great tracks and so many different styles to choose from - I am not even sure I made the right decisions regarding my votes…

I managed to write some short comments while listening to the Soundcloud playlist:

Redman - Air: Solid groove and a nice change with the cut-up voice samples. Nice airy track

D Fast - Hunger: I felt your stomach churn and the feverish look for food in this track

HeartBeatHero - Putcha Hey!: The rave orchestra stabs brought me back to the 90s - a great reminder of Liam Howletts first tracks

Komu - The Bouncer: The soundtrack for a movie scene of Rick Deckard walking home through the rain after being thrown out of the bar by The Bouncer. Nice change with the solo after the drop

Burital - Burital: Bring out the Big Beat! The only thing in this track that lacks energy is your vocal sample, which is a nice counterweight to the rest

Wrong - Know Dat: Great 90s style jungle. Good work on the combination of breakbeats

Crash Noise Division - Shitstorm: I like the dirty beats. Nice short drop at 3’10. You really cut up that drum set, did you not?

Neurogami - Resistor: Great variation on this one. The grunge/crunch/dirt really does it for me

Acodreon - Sith Tit Shit Shit Blow My Whistle Bitx0E: Nice work on the sickening detuned synths. This is an insisting track!

21esters - Aerothetic: Wonderful, shaky melodic breakcore. It reminds me of RDJ. And that’s a good thing.

Kosmonaut - 10 years today: Yay, rock guitar! And growl vocals. It’s not something I hear everyday - and not made in Renoise. Thanks for bringing a pint of genre change to the table

glixxando - pump models: This is not your average upbeat track - and I like that about it. Great to hear “a happy pop tune” which still contains a decent amount of grit and subtle change.

Hanz Meyzer Lab - The Shit ][: Intense flanging synth bass - nice DnB

TheBellows - Holy Shit: That’s a wobbly talking bass if there ever was one. Nice work on the creative changes with it.

Stailer - Ten for Eternity (feat. eSoreni): Someone else said it first: The juxtaposition of the synth/electronic and the orchestra/vocal part is good.

xkernel - Max Masterad: The counterpoint between the slow vocal and flute sample vs the hectic beats - that’s good. Oh, and the slow down in the end reminds me of a classic Fatboy Slim trick

ghismart - Can you feel the shit: The 80s electro beat and bassline fits the robot voice. This is so appropriate for a grainy 80s workout VHS tape telling me I need to work out more, because everything is sheeeet, but will be better…

I am Vivace - All my idols are dead and enemies are in power: Violently aggresive hardcore hiphop. The fuzzy bassline fits the attitude. Death to your enemies! Nice depth and width to the drumbeat.

Rægæ System - Shitty Dub: A cozy little dubplate. I guess all the string work is live recorded? That’s a welcome change in an otherwise tight, straight competition.

00.1 - 20171114 Tue Mb10: Great rythm and nice washes. Those wailing guitars hit my melancholy spot - that’s a good thing. I am Scandinavian after all

Sonic Deadhorse - Dead575 No end in sight for the rain: That’s a really nice rolling beat. The middle part had me thinking we were going to a Kruder & Dorfmeister show in a moment. The voice samples in the background tricked me into thinking my kids were up out of their bed

Garfferen - Mutant X: Short and efficient. Nice synth stabs that almost trip over themselves at some point

Mars64 - UnqualifiedShite: Oldskool DnB. Interesting changes in the beat.

TwoThreeZero - jyu: Great, glithcy track. I have to load up that track and see some of your techniques

basicmethods - Deep: A glitchy deep house track. That walking bass around 2 minutes in is just the icing on the cake. Nice work

Robodub - Octo Man and his Ash: That’s a nice whoopin’ beat / bassline to start off with. The end piano really did end this song well

Bean Machine - Insecticide Shower: That’s a solid banger from industrial technoland. Nice breakdown in the middle to give a bit of aural change and a lot of quirks to end it off nicely.

Jonas78 - Vergeten (My Noons Version): Great beats and a fine melody. I think that’s the first time I heard such laidback drill’n’bass

Head for Hills - Ultraviolet: Nice work. I liked that dirty, grimey synth in the end

Vaeprism - Decagon: The time signature makes this so organic. Nice idea and well executed. It’s very interesting to listen to. My musical expectations are thrown over and I have to pay attention

Hyperunknown - High off the ground: Yay, oldskool vocal DnB. Too bad about the volume drop after the first vocal section - IMHO it stole some of the energy of the song. I feel like zooming through the clouds with this one in the headset

Msykmiakos - Tribute to Mutant Breaks: Now, this is the old school DnB. Nice work on the beats even with a classic sample and the continuous changes in both rythm and effects.

EatMe - Another Backup Reminder: This started out really sharp and then the sound turned fuzzy and even more hectic. Funky little track with a nice breakdown halfway in

Type-A - Mutant Glitch Shit: Wow, that nice glitchy end part came unexpected. I guess I did not focus enough on the title

PBF - BalkFriday: A relaxed start to a very insisting track. Nice drum work! You even managed to sneak in a siren just to stay true to that brutal warehouse rave!

eee - 9250: A different genre again. Nice vibe and good subs to the footwork hihats

encryptedmind - In Memoriam (Lucid 6AM Mix): That’s a great stumbling beat and bassline. Good work! I guess will go into my music library and be replayed for the missus

I justed wanted to take the opportunity to thank you all for these inspirational tracks. Now I know where to go for great samples and ditto effects and techniques.

Also, thanks a lot for your comments on my track so far. This is a great competition and I will do all I can to try and find some time to partake again next year!

1st observation after …listening to all the songs again

but this time i open the XRNI file for each entry

im never everrrrr…going to be able to write a song at 700BPM :frowning:

i know that there are posts…of breackore in the forum…and also youtube vids on how to approach to build this types of drum patterns…and overall processing

butt still…wtf…:frowning:

i would love if…anyone of you…make a (track from scratch) or at least a big portion…of this type of music  …and put it out in a video

genuinely interested

Wow, there’s a lot of cool entries and love to see the amount. We’re alive and kicking!

Too bad we only have 3 votes, these guys got mine:

  • Glixxando

  • Komu

  • Sonic deadhorse (Love how the sounds are panning, I’m gonna have to look at the XRNS)

Cheers

Breakcore In 10 Steps:

[1] BPM : 170 - 210

LPB : 24

Pattern Length : 384

[2]Process Amen break and old breaks

[3] Make 4 patterns of drum combinations

[4] Render 4 patterns of drum combinations

[5] Slice render patterns into quarter sections, eight sections, sixteenth sections [whichever you want depending on how much work you wanna do]

[6] Re-arrange slices in the pattern editor to make crazy patterns [or apply slot randomisation using Yxx command in the phrase editor]

[7] Apply random effects as you see fit [filter sweeps, pans, retriggers, sends, etc, etc]

[8] Re-ender those new patterns out again

[9] Re-do steps [5] - [7]

[10] Melody…just go mad [I suck at this part and normally just use small sampled parts of music so it’s all up to to you]

That’s all that it comes down to. After that it just takes skill and imagination. I find melodies hard to keep track of because of the speed of breakcore, I’ve yet to understand how guys like Ruby My Dear can create such crazy tracks with all the variations in sounds at such fast speeds but I guess it just comes down to practice and persistence. I can’t be arsed really putting in the time for breakcore anymore cause I’m a lazy prick.

Here’s a quick example of the kind of drums that can be made using the steps I outlined up above. Never bothered finishing the track but I might in the future.https://www.dropbox.com/s/gu17ab3b93ywkbi/_%20TuMi%205%20%5B2%5D.wav?dl=0

thanks for this stuff man

… i just don’t think a lot of this sounds came out naturally by sequencing … or even rearranging sequences of prerecorded loops

…for me its hard to approach it ,cause it never feels like second nature to me…like when i’m writing my own stuff… i always know what to do next…because im driven but what i can play

on a guitar or on a 25keys midi keyboard

and the experimentation part…came in the sound design…stage…

i don;t know if this makes sense to you :frowning:

but what i’m trying to say here …its that the music i make…somehow lives in my brain…and i only …arrange stuff that i can somehow play…like melodies or chords…or simple drum patterns…

but this music its the opposite of that… i realize that after seeing 21esters song

it looks like this guy indeed .arrange his track and programed …a lot if not all …the sounds …which is awesome …

my point is…that i can make this …but …it seems for now that i cant make it …without losing all the musicality 1st…

its like there’s no coherence …or any melodic or harmonic context.

at least in my unsuccessful attempts

:frowning:

this is really hard for me… i wonder is some of you experience the same with other genre of electronic music
