Mvt∆n†•br∑∆kz•#17••• OH THE HUMANITY!

Alright, I guess I got tired of waiting for someone else to organize this so I’ll do it.

Mutant muthafuggin breaks is back, biotch

RULES: No Rules!

Actual rules:

•song must be composed/produced/realized in renoise (pm me your xrns before deadline to verify actual renoise composition if not sharing xrns publicly)

•2-6 minutes in length

•any genre, no genre, new genre

•VSTs are all good :+1:

•submit a link to your NEW ORIGINAL SONG (no reworks, remixes, old tracks) -preferably thru soundcloud or bandcamp so people can easily listen, but whatever - in this thread before the deadline due date. COLLABS are ok and encouraged but only ONE submission per person/collaboration.

DEADLINE: NEW DEADLINE: JULY 15TH

PRIZES: ??? anyone want to contribute? pm me. We have some ca$h prizes offered already, but I’m sure the community can sweeten the pot :honey_pot:

VOTING: everyone who submits a track gets to vote. no submission, no vote. Depending on the number of submissions we will either vote for top 5 or top three, ranked point values (i.e. 1st gets 3 points, second 2, third 1). All will become clear in time

COMPLETELY OPTIONAL EXTRA POINTS:

+1 for using 17 LPB

+1 for composing in 17/4, 17/8, or 17/16 for at least a good portion of the song, doesn’t need to be the whole thing.

+1 for using a 17 note microtonal scale, stretched across as many octaves as you like

+1 for using pattRNS pattern scripts in a significant way in the piece

+2 for all native synthesis/dsp (tools and resampling are all good)

+2 for sharing your xrns publicly

WRITE A GREAT SONG and extra points won’t matter, so NO BITCHING. Some of us like a little extra challenge

THEME: HUMANITY :fire::fire::fire:

let’s GOOOOOOO!!!

Great initiative

When sending the xrns file to you for verifying, how can it be done if the song uses VST’s you don’t have?

Good! Good!

What is 17/4? Is it 4/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 + 1/4 ?

Why not 5/7 or 7/11?

This notation has very little relevance unless it’s transitioning to/from some other more conventional bar notation.

On its own this it’s really the same as a 5/8 or 7/8 (or 16) with a difficult to read tempo indication, this would make very little (ie. no) sense in a sequencer context beyond “play this at a tempo of 140 seven eighth of a beat per minute”… (actually 122 bpm)

But it does exists, have fun, read on :

There’s no inherent indication on how to “cut” or accent/emphasize it, do as you please

No worries if I don’t have the vsts, the file will still open so I can verify that it is, in fact, a renoise composition.

Of course, it is unlikely that anyone would try to “cheat,” and use a different DAW, but once prizes or incentives are involved, humans can be crafty little monkeys, so, the xrns verification is just to keep everyone honest

Sure. Or any grouping of rhythmic units that totals 17. There are lots of ways to subdivide. For instance, 3+3+3+3+3+2, or 2+3+2+3+2+3+2+2+3, or 4+3+2+3+2+3. This is sometimes called additive rhythm or modal rhythm and can create a lot of unique and interesting grooves. The idea here is to encourage creative rhythmic play. 4/4 can get a bit boring at times

Again, working in some form of 17 is totally optional to participate

Without a theme there’s no incentive participating imo. There has to be something to achieve. It seems meeting the requirements for extra points (aka strange composing ) actually is the “theme”. But ok, in the end it’s MBC… Have fun!

4/4 never gets boring. :upside_down_face:

Well, suggest a theme then!

Prizes ; the joy of composing; eternal glory on the playlist lol

idk man, I’ve heard a lot of boring music in 4/4. but i suppose it’s not necessarily the time signature that makes something boring

Fun. Joy. Community.

Choose one: Industrial revolution, Underwater journey or Furious anger.

Exactly, it’s the composer. I’ve also heard a lot of boring music that’s not in 4/4.

Thanks for the suggestions! Anyone else have any ideas? Get em in today and we can put it to a vote

Theme proposal: High Speed Car Chase. Bonus point if you describe the imaginary movie scene where your entry is the soundtrack of in the Song Comments of your .xrns file.
