Yes this is a great idea and I’ve issued such open ended composition challenges in the past (white noise challenge, sine wave challenge). Would be nice to see more such events taking place. Of course anyone is welcome to do so ![]()
Oh, body percussion. My contribution will most likely be the biggest disappointment ever. ![]()
Body percussion definitely NOT mandatory, lol
I did end up doubling some of my percussion with self-generated vocal percussion to add some texture and, well, humanity..
Sounds alright!
The theme is totally up to the individual to interpret
Given that humanity is such a broad concept, it should give rise to some interesting and different sounds in the comp
I’m in favour of awarding +1 point to anyone who uses human percussion with slices
I don’t think I’ll have time to enroll, I don’t even find time to work on my tracks outside of this one so doing one solely for the contest would be too hard to me.
However, I hope lots of people are going to participate as this is something that makes our forum special, and will try to have a listen to every submission and vote! ![]()
EDIT: thanks a lot @slujr for contributing to the community that much and hosting this
microscale+subscale cycling+cycle map.xrni (6.4 KB)
a script for using tidal cycles with a custom microtonal scale (you need a scala file)
i’m no programmer so the code is probably wonky
except it’s impossible to send a note off command through mapping, so “~” does nothing and the note just continues
Your code already forwards the rest ~ from the pattern which becomes an OFF. you can also return an "off" string from the map to have an OFF in the output pattern.
On the other hand, trying to map the hold step (_ symbol in mini-notation) is pointless as those are only used by the cycle to lengthen a previous note, they will never make it to the map function.
aaah, you are right. it didnt work in my case because the cycle was something like cycle("~ c2"). I guess it can’t send a note off command when there is no note? But without the cycle it works: event = {"off", "c2"}

but this works as well cycle("off c2")
ok, this works: if value == "off" then return "off" end
If you can create an image to represent the competition, then I’ll promote it on the official Renoise socials.
I think we will need some hand drawn human made artwork for this one. Anyone want to have a crack at it? Doesn’t have to be fancy or pefect. That’s maybe the point. Submissions welcome.
I’ll be traveling for the next couple of weeks so may not have time to make something myself
Hmm..
Hmmm..

@slujr is there any date you have in mind for opening/closing submissions? I was trying to figure out I’ll be able to participate.
See OP. We have a tentative deadline of July 1st, but it may well get pushed back a couple weeks. Be great to have you join if you can!
