Question About Large Renoise Files

Hi,

I have been working on a renoise file (58MB) that has roughly 300 samples and tracks and around 500 patterns. There are no external VST effects or instruments but the internal DSP effects are used a fair bit.

Loading this file in to renoise on my laptop almost kills it. It barely plays and takes ages to switch views or scroll through the tracks on the mixer view making editing almost impossible.

I am currently looking for a new laptop. I’ve seen a 2 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 machine with 3GB of RAM. Would this machine be able to cope with this large file or would a more powerful machine be more suitable?

Thanks.

Hi,

If you want, I can test & play your .XRNS file on my computer

Greetings,

ViZiON

seems like ViZiON is desperately looking for .xrns file #659 here, ;)

seriously 300 tracks?
well… as we don’t know how much stress the song actually performs on the system, it’s quite hard to say if it would suffice.
only thing i can say is that a 2ghz core2duo is a pretty fast machine for native dsp / samples only renoise operation.

but seeing that your current laptop is a celeron 1.46ghz singlecore, i’d say that the c2d would run your tune with ease if your celeron does it with problems.

I’m using a XPS1330 4gig Duo T7700 / 2.40hgz. I use it for writing and it loads up 100meg+ files fine. As for the 300tracks I’ve never run that many before … but I would be happy to load and tell you if you need a safety net …

Yeah, I’d also love to have a look at this… just to, uhm, help you.

cleanse, fold and consolidate. :)
that is rather amazing. i was doing this for quite awhile, i didn’t have that many tracks though, but i did have about 27 minutes of intricate work.

if you continue this, you will probably want something much stronger as you surely are not going to stop where you currently are right?
i personally would look into an actual portable ruggedized desktop.

it’s obvious i know but i must say nightly backups of your work becomes extremely important in this scenario.

Don’t trust those guys. Send it over to me instead!

Thanks for the replies guys.

The numbers are estimates. I have merged 10 tracks which each roughly contain 30 samples with a separate track for each sample and roughly 50 patterns per song. I have not rendered the song yet so I’m not sure if it has all merged correctly.

Once loaded the song idles at 26% CPU and plays at around 70% but stutters pretty bad. The total mem usage in the task manager is 750MB which looks to be my main problem.

I think for now I’ll put the project on hold.

You must be doing something wrong and overcomplicated :D

You failed to mention your computer parameters. That’s probably the issue.

You gotta push the boundaries man.

They’re in my sig. I think you’re probably right though.

celeron + 1 gb ram = upgrade now
