I have just gathered some more info about it after your post; it is interesting indeed: finally not simply a shiny device with a demented GUI which makes it impossible to perform anything but clicks, rather a flexible device which you can choose to use either as a computer ora a tablet.
I’m not against tablet per-se, but trying to make people think tablets can be used to do everything, from reading books (it will hurt your eyes) to “playing piano” (yes, sure…), is stupid.
ipads do have a keyboard, it’s on the screen.
I’m sure that can be used to input info into a tracker, key commands and all.
A custom on-screen keyboard could also do some tricks that a regular keyboard can’t.
For instance you could design it so that:
the keys give visual feedback of tracker information - I’m thinking of notes here
the keyboard has tabs with alternative keyboard layouts and related actions
there is an option to add dynamics to the keys, so that, for instance, the closer you press to the center, or top of the key the greater the volume
the keyboard allows for more simultaneous key presses than a typical external keyboard allows
the keyboard allows for dragging your fingur across the keys, triggering notes/samples/automation info as as it moves, or
the keys could be placed in a user-customizable way so that you could, for example,
— space out and orient the keys so they are more comfortable to use
— break away from the traditional QWERTY placement of key characters
— arrange keys in groups, or a grid
In fact, the more I think of it, the touchscreen keyboard could be amazing to use with a tracker
You could use AirDisplay to convert your iPad into a Monitor-by-wi-fi, and then put it right on top of your pckeyboard and next to the mouse. You wouldn’t really be inputting anything through the iPad, but you WOULD be seeing Renoise on the iPad screen. Is that close enuff for ya?
as if the ipad doesnt have a ton of music apps already… Rebirth and a ton of soft-midi controllers…
Ive been using SunVox and to a lesser extent Milky on my Dell pocket PC, SunVox in particular is a neat app with fun options, nothing on the level of Renoise, but for a tiny app on a tiny pc wiht 6 buttons and a stylus for an interface, its nice. Fun too cuz its all 8bit pretty much, and theres some real potential for some of its synths. That Spectravoice is neat. Also the pattern arrangement is really cool, sorta awkward at first cuz they arent automatically sequenced right after one another, but the opiton of multiple patterns of varied lengths side by side… I can see potential. Not something that will overtake Renoise by any means, but for something i can keep in my pocket for when the inspiration hits, its handy as hell, if only as a scratch pad.
Milky tends to glitch though, and i havent put any samps on the ppc yet, so i havent really gotten too into that one.
4pockets’ music app Aurora is fun to play with too, idk if it has ipad version, but its fun to play with the monome-style pattern editor and flashy fx-modulating spangles. And you can set key/mode, so you cant be off key. Which has already taught me a lot about scales.
If youre craving music with tracker interface, on ipad, try sunvox. Cant really think of a reason not to and have 8bit fun. Or get Rebirth
according to reviews it’s more like 3 hours +, but i think the main purpose of the device is that it is first a computer and second a tablet… you just unplug the computer from the power when you want to move around and then replug it anywhere with a power source when needed.
i might add that since it’s a computer you can use another OS than windows 7 if that’s your cup of tea.
am I the only one who doesn’t understand the ipod/tablets hype? I just don’t get it. I can imagine it is useful for browsing web, checking maps when you are lost or something like that… but nothing else. It’s just too tiny.
Making renoise available for ipods/ipads/iwhatever is a waste of time. From my personal experiance - the more options you have, the less creative you become. So I just stick to what I have and try to focus on work being done.
I think a multi-touch tracker on an ipad could be very interesting. I’ve already mentioned my views on possible keyboard advantages, but I can imagine other great things.
For instance, what about being able to select multiple notes in the pattern editor and increase or decrease their note value by dragging your fingers?
Being able to manipulate the information in the pattern editor in multiple places at once could be very cool in a live context.
I think the ipad, and similar devices open the door to someone who wants to create a new kind of tracker.
Not that there isn’t plenty of room to make a new type of tracker for mouse and traditional keyboard driven operating systems.
I think Renoise is proving that.
Renoise on Ipad makes as much sense as Vim or Emacs on an Ipad.
Generally, music making tools make sense on those machines, but not programmes whose main benefit/focus is the fact that they are keyboard centric.
Well, I think customizable touchscreen keyboards could be really cool in a tracker context. In fact, I can imagine wanting to hook up a touchscreen keyboard to my Mac if it allows me to do some nifty tracking related tricks.
Agreed, I don’t see what the issue is. Press finger where you want to enter note. Keyboard pops up. Enter note. The end. Works great in sunvox, anyway. Fruity loops for ipad should be out soon as well, I wonder how that will pan out.
Also, being able to control all your effects and the mixer by multitouch would be rather mind-blowing. Goodbye any need for an external control surface.
Modern tablets have more than enough horsepower to run a serious DAW. There’s already some pretty nifty software out there now (and thanks to audiocopy you can pass audio between a lot of ipad apps now)… looking forward to the day when my entire DAW weights less than two pounds and is also a customizable control surface. /end drooling
sunvox is truly great and should get more publicity. it is a tracker instaed of some lame step sequencer/ piano roll combo (griff, syntrax, aurora etc.). i use it on an hp ipaq, the stylus + d-pad input is sweet because you can write songs whilst slouching back on the sofa. dont have to be hunched over a keyboard. I’d like to see the renoise developers team up with the guy who made sunvox to produce a sunvox-like software. (but this is just dreaming)
I just released a free tracker for Android 2.2 or newer. In future versions, I plan on having an export to Renoise feature. ToneFlash saves all of its music in a JSON file format so creating a conversion utility should be a breeze if you are impatient.
a lot of this thread is exciting, it’s just too bad the parent of the discussion has been labeled “Ipad” instead of “mobile” or “handheld”.
I’ve often thought of a possible tool that works on mobiles that allows you to write simple patterns to an xrns (but then went the route of so many and chose some random app that writes to a mod) but then the fact that there seems to be discussions about “clips” coming up here and there on the forums… Clips might be cool if they could be synced automatically through some form of ftp or so called cloud. of course then vst and midi instruments would most likely have to be represented as sound samples on the mobile.
just my 2 cents on the discussion as I’ve often thought of such an application for handheld devices that works seamlessly with renosie… I think (cough cough) fruityloops has something that runs on handheld now or it’s coming soon??
