Slicing a sample into pattern-length chunks

Hi! I am fairly new to Renoise and have really been enjoying learning the software!

Let’s say I have a long guitar sample (30 seconds or so) that is recorded to the bpm of a particular renoise track loaded into Renoise. I would like to split this sample into either smaller samples or slice markers based on the pattern length. I know I can do this manually, but it is very tedious and error prone - when i first tried to do this, I ended up manipulating the sample with imperfect sample cuts.

Is there some way to have renoise automatically place slice markers and/or split into smaller samples based on the current pattern length and the bpm of the track? Or can I input the length of time in milliseconds of a pattern somewhere and have renoise space out the slice markers appropriately?

I’d like to have each pattern trigger the appropriate part of a long sample, instead of having to seek back to the beginning of the track, or five or six patterns back to where the long sample was triggered.

For vocals or anything with lots of gaps in the sound, its easy enough to manually slice and trigger the samples. But for samples that are constant sound, I feel that there must be a better way.

Thanks! I’d be curious to hear what you guys think.

Using the “snap” option. “Beats”, for example, should lock the slice points to pattern-matched locations.

There are a few tools for slicing.

Haven’t use them though. Worth checking see if there are othershttp://www.renoise.com/tools

I’ve come across this thread which explains my issue more clearly:

I think I will try to use JACK transport to “rewire” Renoise into a horizontal DAW like ardour for the tracks where I’m doing long guitar samples. Or maybe I will try rewire.

I tried snapping to beats and that works and all but it’s still a tedious process. I’ll also take a look at the tools page and the tools API to see if there’s some way from the API to slice a sample into a preset interval of time. Chop-sample is close, but requires the sample to be the exact length. I guess I could pad out samples to be the exact length and use that as a workaround - but I think maybe ardour/renoise might be a better thing to try. Thanks

No need to destructively chop up your sample to achieve this.

Simply enable Autoseek for the long recording.

Place a note to trigger the sample on the first pattern as usual, then Autoseek will take care of the rest whenever moving the song position or playing from another pattern.

Yep, autoseek is a wonderful feature. My favourite, actually

If you get comfortable with autoseek, you might also want to check out this tool:

It allows you to hit a keyboard shortcut while in the pattern editor, and slice the current sample at the cursor position.

Just a vote for the “Chop Sample” plugin. I use it all the time and it’s great for slicing an already-sync’d sample (like a recording) into standard-length bits.
