Well, they did saved Europe during WWII by sacrifice and starving out most Germans. That is one of the history sections where Russia is my hero. That does not mean i condone the things Stalin did before, during and after the war with his own people though.

Still it`s nothing weird to me, Russian gov is something external if not hostile to its citizens, every single Russian that i know personally is cool. They are mostly students so i can have wrong picture, and the picture is " talented/hard working individuals who always have great vodka and awful cigarettes"

But you said a “Russian” saved the world. Hence my reply. Had you said “a regular guy with guts” saved the world, I wouldn’t have made it, since he did NOT save it from being destroyed by “regular guys with guts”.
But from my perspective and in this context, “Russian” is a citizenship thing, a passport. But yeah, classism is the same anywhere, no debate there, either. But so is the cop out of seeing the state of which you are a member and which has all it’s ACTUAL POWER from other members like you (and only a thin coating and a bunch of lies from the “political class”, and hardly any actual substance) as something external from you. It’s sickness #1 in my view… in the Church, in Fascism, in the Multimedia Show Circus… the other side of that “medal” is feeling part of something in which you have no say… having all the glory of the big “body” transfered to each puny slave of it… but I digress 
Those students you mentioned don’t work for the military… if a Bomber pilot gets ordered to bomb a hospital refuses, I’d applaud them too, but at the same time, that should be the standard, not something special! You accept that job, you accept the responsibility.

Western standard maybe, this guy knew that he will be on the margin of society (and his family) in most optimistic version if he disobey orders.
He couldn`t leave Russia, there was nothing like private companies so he knew that his decision means civil death. I read somewhere that technicans from Charnobyl knew that there will be melt, but they afraid that they loose their jobs - strange you say. Not so strange if you aware that their flats, medical care and even shops (when you can buy food! every single day!!) was given to them because they were part of nuclear powerplant team.
What im trying to say is - for me hes a hero.
