i actually started this track in NoiseTracker… ntk…
but this was in the period i realized that renoise
was the dope… so it went over and became 100%
i have really big trouble with changing platforms.
it must be something that forces me over to the next level.
in the ntk to rns thing it was “stereo samples”
today im still using 1.28 of renoise because i really don’t like the
pattern editor as it is today… cant get myself to use it smoothly.
hope theres some stuff that will force me to move along.
I’ve got to go to bed right now, but I can detail it out for you how I did it in more thoroughly, in the morning.
The short version is that it’s a clean sample of me tweaking the cutoff on a virus c.
Then I play some notes of the sample in a renoise track with slight distortion, compression, reverb and a particular light flange setting that helps bring out the character of the sound, with the whole track modulated gently by a filter (can’t remember off hand if it was high or lowpass).
BTW the squelch is coming from the sample mostly, not the filter I added in.
I just did that to give it a little variety as it played. It would sound pretty much the same without it.
I’ll try to give you more specifics tomorrow if you’d like.
Yeah, I think it’s just a few square type oscillators (don’t remember exactly what the settings were, but it was pretty basic) with maybe a little detune and me turning the cutoff real fast and back and sampling that.
I was initially opposed to using ‘pre-tweaked’ samples as opposed to the actual synth, but it works out ok and you can do some interesting things with reverse and starting the sample in a different place.
Obviously the time gets a little stretched or compressed when you play other notes, but it’s not too bad.
Anyway, a slight bit of flange and some minor distortion added will give it the sound like in the sample I posted. I tried using the native renoise distortion, but I coulndn’t quite get it right so I had to resort to third party measures.
I wish I could be of more help with the making of the original sound, but I just twiddle knobs 'til I hear something I like.
Like I said, the original sound is a really clean undistorted ‘wow’ type thing that gets squelchy with the bit of distortion.
