Unusable in Fullscreen

Hi, hope this was not reported so far.

Im on a 2019 Intel Macbook Pro 16 and as soon as i open renoise in fullscreen it stops responding to inputs.
It then runs on like 2-3 Seconds per Frame and is overall unusable. The moment i put it back to window mode it works perfectly fine.

If i can help reproduce it or debug it in any way i would be glad to help.

What macos? Try to disable hardware acceleration in the settings.

Hi, sorry should have added that information: Im running the latest version of Sonoma 14.0 (23A344).

I also managed to “fix” the problem. It seems that the Option "Use Metal based GFX rendering (when available) causes it to stop responding to inputs in fullscreen. However when i deactivate it it runs horrible. Its probably around 10 fps where scrolling is quite hard to do and even watching meters is a headache.

I also found the cause of that and thats enabling “Enable Retina HiDPI display support” but with it disabled it causes the whole interface to become super blurry and text becomes unreadable.

Not sure whats happening there. I also tried changing colourprofiles as the built in p3 profile broke a previous build but this isnt helping anymore.

Not sure if im just screwing something up but thats my situation rn

I think there was a common/known problem with Intel GPUs, Metal and Renoise. Do you have an Intel GPU, or AMD?

Do you have any chance to test Ventura or even Mojave with your hardware, too? Maybe from some 1:1 backup drive?

The color profile “trick” seems not be a topic anymore since Mojave, AFAIK. But if you want to try this, you need to select sRGB profile, so a not a 14^3 bits profile.

Also maybe try to do the following:

  1. Disable Metal rendering
  2. Enable Retina resolution
  3. Disable plugin sandboxing
  4. Restart Renoise and test it

Its both. I tried the radeon pro 5300m disabled and enabled, both seem to have that issue. (im not sure if i can disable the onboard gpu of the intel chip but that would probably kill my battery life so id rather not)

I used my mac with windows until recently so i cant really test it with the latest few versions but i know that it worked perfect with the srgb trick like 1-2 years ago.

For your recommended fixes:

  1. yes it fixes the fullscreen bug but will cause renoise to run unbearably slow and low fps (10fps or below which makes navigation etc. really hard to do.)
  2. retina resolution inside renoise is what causes the low fps. if i disable it it runs smooth but everything is blurry making some text impossible to read
  3. i got that disabled by default

So far the only way to use renoise for me is in windowed mode or it will either need to be blurry because of the retina option or run slow because of the metal rendering.

Its not a huge issue for me because i can just make the window as big as my desktop without clicking the fullscreen button but its still kinda annoying.

Also thanks for taking your time btw. Really appreciate it!

Yes, that’s the “recommended” procedure in general. If you’re running Renoise in full screen the GUI gets cut. In full screen you cannot even read what song you’re currently running.

Edit:
Just checked. In full screen you cannot read the current song title, but there are 2 positions more shown in the disk browser (like 2 samples) and in the pattern editor. That’s the difference compared to manual maximization. But if you close Renoise in maximum size and open it again, the maximum size remains. That’s how I do it voluntarily ever since, and this way you doesn’t even need to click on a button to enlarge the GUI. Btw, if you open Renoise it will never be full screen by default, it’s the same size and position than last time you’ve closed it. Should be the same behavior on Win, Mac and Linux.

Ah yeah, thats also how i usually use it. Just would love the fullscreen to work cause of my usual workflow with multiple fullscreen windows and swipe gestures. I will probably just need to manually add desktops for now. Hope this gets fixed sometime in the future.

Do you know if this works with M series macbooks and if those weird metal bugs are only on intel?

Unfortunately not, I’m a Windows user who avoids Apple for several reasons.

Works here normally on m1pro/Monterey.

@TNT The best computer system actually is as PC with macos. unfortunately Intel /cisc is a dying species in apple world. Though macos still comes with a lot of windows like drivers. I mean, if you want serious computer…

I’m happy having a computer that WORKS flawlessly in every aspect and is compatible to everything. Not even a single Apple product provides that. A serious computer is a computer that WORKS.

A serious computer does not crash, has a fully accelerated desktop and provides a good audio api and solid base system. So not your beloved Windows, which is mainly for kids who like gaming.

I mean, just look at this, a picture says more than 1000 words:

Lately though it seems to me that Microsoft UX designers started to work at Apple :weary:

Ah, that’s why everyone was using WIndows ever since. Even today Windows has a market share of 70%. Don’t even try to tell me these are gamers… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Not this tiny and blurred picture.

Anyway, if you’re happy with Apple despite all the problems you’re mentioning in this forum, good for you. Just keep using Apple, I’ll keep using Windows. :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, it is their first computer and people don’t want to change anything. Since there is no other rational explanation for using Windows. And since they are using Windows, they can’t understand their computer. Also Microsoft is a evil company which bundled a lot of spyware, while Apple are now in peace with mother nature, and also even blocks out the FBI!! Just watch their great nature clip. Also best critics, since people finally understand.

The phantasies of an Apple disciple… :joy:
Think about Commodore, Atari and DOS PC. And yes, Apple also existed at that time…

This clip was made on a Windows computer, too.

I actually seen a lot of people suffering from that Windows sickness. And yes, 70% come from people who don’t know better. But since you didn’t mention Amiga, it makes me believe that you also count to that 70%…

Why should one use Windows for video, for having 10 times the rendering time, barely good software, and loud fan spinning all the time? Ok, maybe to save heating costs…

You sure about that?

Well, as you might know an Amiga is a computer by Commodore, so in fact I’ve mentioned every single computer by Commodore including every single Amiga. And yes, I’m a user, not a technician. I want things to work, no less and no more. Do you drive car? Are you a mechanic? You’re most likely driving the wrong car if not, aren’t you? I’m sure you get the point…

Anyway, back to topic!

Well, a driving license should be a minimum at least… No need to be mechanic, if you use macos, the best OS in the world. It’s literally made for you ghost drivers. There even is only one mouse button, so you won’t be confused so much anymore.

Don’t worry, I’m capable of building a computer from parts and make it run. I don’t even need a license for that. And I can choose the parts and the software I want to use. There’s a lot of choice, because it’s compatible. I know, that’s a foreign word for an Apple fanboy. But I’m happy if you are. And this time your magic Apple gear even allowed you to visit the forum without being kicked. Now back to topic. :slightly_smiling_face:

Look, the point of modern Apple hardware is to have everything in a single rent-to-own-chip, no need to build anything. Just throw it away including the whole case, when old or defective, buy new. So simple. No need for upgrade either. So the opposite of your Windows PC, where you need to hack the registry to make it work with asio4all or something.
