I think there hasn’t been made a topic yet where fellow Renoisers can tell what they’re listening at the moment.
Give the usual info; artist, title and album.
I just listened to the latest album of wAgAwAgA ‘Jinjanoon Bus’. I loved it, such an amazing sound that guy creates. Beeg Spenda track was a brilliant finish.
Devin Townsend - Addicted
Steve Vai - Where The Wild Things Are
Bowie - Station To Station
Manu Delago - Made In Silence
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Fever Ray
Xerxes - Selected Works 1 + 2
Plus, a few clients I’m mastering that have some top songs.
Old stuff sounding fresh to my ears on rotation:
Anything by Marilyn Manson
Pink Floyd - Pulse
Typo O Negative - Slow Hard and Deep
Korn’s first album.
Wire - A Bell Is A Cup
Roxy Music - Avalon
…
Converge - Axe To Fall(technical-ish hardcore/metal)
Listened to it several times and it’s still not clicking for me. There’s great songs and great bits in other songs, but as a whole I’m not feeling engaged in the music. They pretty much nailed the ‘multiple short, fast songs with lengthy centrepieces’ formula on the previous two albums and I was excited when it became clear they were branching out and experimenting more here. But it’s not working for me. I’ll give it more tries in case it suddenly clicks though.
Venetian Snares - Rossz Csillag Alatt Született, Detrementalist & My Downfall
These albums seem much more to my taste than the other stuff. The integration with orchestral elements works extremely well and the more involved vocals of Detrementalist really brings it alive. I’ve only listened to them a couple of times each, so I’m still getting to know them.
Mutyumu - Ilya(proggy classical/rock type thing)
Only just grabbed this yesterday and it’s pretty hard to describe. Has elements of ambient, classical, prog rock and some heavier parts. Certain sections remind me of Sigur Ros with an operatic female voice, while others are a less aggressive Unexpect. It not really what I thought it would be, so I’m sure it’ll reveal more of what it actually is when I don’t just have it on in the background while doing other things.
Gorguts - From Wisdom To Hate(technical death metal)
It was always going to be hard to follow up the seminal underground game-changer that previous album Obscura was, but this has a pretty good go at it. It’s (relatively) simpler, especially the drums, but still contains plenty of discordant melodies arranged into complex riffs that, if you’re into this kind of thing, actually make great songs. The ending to ‘Elusive Treasures’ in particular, is just awesome.
This is over the last few weeks, not all at the same time right now
