yes, I was
and i was right in my assumption that you did not enter, twilek - why?
anyway, fourth - i think that’s the best i’ve done so far.
thanks for all the comments, people (even though everyone seems to have a completely different opinion ) - as for how suitable mine is to a party, well - not all parties are dance parties not that those who thought it was unsuitable were wrong, of course, because it’s just down to the type of parties we’ve gone to - mine are usually more chilled-out. so that’s my excuse
hmm so bb3 is over, congratz to youth as he seems to have won
where to get the releases, btw?
are they public yet?
youth: the solo is easily my favourite part of the track
keith, you can get them on the results page celsius posted. each song name is a download link.
I’ll move into a new apartment next Saturday so I have had plenty to do regarding this the last weeks. So I have had no time left over for composing. My old appartment is in a complete mess at the moment and most of my stuff are already packed into cartons…
If the next beatbattle wont be too soon I’ll maybe get time to enter that one insted Time will tell
Congratulations to all participants and thanks for the feedback.
I’m glad that over 20 participants took their time to leave feedback. Very enlightening and entertaining. I personally found that the voting was the hardest part of the competition. It took me four hours!
I am glad to be 10th place, i have no complaints. However, I would like to address a problem with the voting system:
I think because a lot of people with different tastes voted in this competition, it skews the results. Example: LFO was the best track in my opinion. The comments also indicate that someone else also shared my opinion. But it somehow got 5th place?!
In the end, ‘earwax’ won because no one really hated it. I thought it was a solid track, and i am happy it won. Yet, it is unfortunate that other tracks suffer because people don’t like the style or complain about elements they aren’t familiar because they are not dedicated to the genre.
Example: Friday, the second best track in my opinion uses minimalism so amazingly, and people complain it’s boring?!
If five people vote on a track no one hates:
7,7,8,7,8 = 7.4
If five people vote on a track that some love and some hate:
10,10,0,5,7 = 6.4
Because the genre is too subjective, people vote with their opinion instead of their knowledge of stylistic elements.
This contest was split between people who go to club/jungle/house parties and those who go to demo parties. I was expecting BEATS in a beat battle! Not melodies. Haha. Many tracks suffered a cruel fate they may not have desrved because people like me voted down anything that wasn’t DJ oriented.
After this initial experience, I would say that the ideal competition would be one where the genre is fixed. Also, someone who is an expert in the genre should decide the winner. Not people who dislike the genre.
It would be more of a challenge and less ambiguous.
Thank you for your time.
I love Earwax, and i want it in my ears all the time
I did not take part in the competition, but I would love to download the contributions, where can I do that?
ok. competing with music is in itself a pretty silly idea. how the hell can you say one tune is better than the other? well, you can’t! one person can think its better, but another can think its not.
therefore,
NO RATING SYSTEM WILL EVER BE FAIR TO EVERYONE.
its that simple really.
btw, good compo folks, lots of good tunes imo.
take care!
.x
Thanx a lot, that’s really nice to hear!! The comments for mine and other songs are really different… Some people like monotonous techno/house while others just find it boring. Like you I voted down songs with too much melodies that didn’t fit into the theme imo. In the end it’s just a matter of taste of course…
I agree with Xerses…
My song for example received two “9,9,10”, some “8,8,9” votes, five"0,0,0" and some “1,1,2” … Tastes are tastes
About my song:
the comment “In Russia we have a proverb: not fish, not meat” is perfect, it’s what I thought when I finished it Btw, it was only an experiment and I wouldn’t can imagine such a strange (and ugly…) song played during a party…
Congratulations to Youth, even if in my opinion LFO and Beathouse were the best tunes
see you
Just a little word to say a big congratulation to all the participants. I learnt a lot by looking in these RNS files !!
I’d also greet the guy who made ‘Burn’, it’s a real masterpiece in my opinion.
Well done everyone !
Jnv.
i agree, it was my favourite track. i only wish it was longer.
and i agree with xerxes. besides, i think “you just don’t understand the genre” is one of the lamest responses to someone not liking a track, because it doesn’t change anything - they still don’t like it. music is music.
Friday was also my favourite. At first it bored me because it sounded pretty empty and standard, and I didn’t expect that to be on purpose, but as it progressed it all made sense. Reminded me of Plastikman.
Lame? Haha. Sure buddy, nice one.
There are plenty of songs in the compo i disliked. Even a few i hated.
I’ll use the reference youtH made about Friday as an example: Ritchie Hawtin (plastikman) has many albums out and is an internationally well respected techno producer, yet some people will find him boring and repetitive. That opinion is irrelevant, if not insulting, to the thousands of people worldwide who love this style.
Just because i don’t like a genre does not make me a judge. It makes me a critic.
In the olympics, scores from many judges are approx the same because they are given a criteria to work with. The style of the competitors are different yet for some reason many judges come up with similar scores. Therefore, there is no doubt that if we had competent judges, this would be a fair competition.
Anyway, i had fun in the compo. I hope those who got low scores are not too discouraged. I am just posting an opinion. Respect to all.
Cool avatar Connor I went to a c64-retro party last month… crazy… anyway I even made some tunes on that old breadbox, you can find a link here: http://www.opensourcesolutions.org/michel/…jsp?id=MyTunes if anyone is interested
Thank you!
I’m not sure if it’s a masterpiece though…
conner bw: you say things i agree with, and things i don’t.
but i think we’d both agree that judging the tracks as it is done isn’t really ‘fair’, and never can be, unless it’s turned into judging-by-numbers, which leads to tracking-by-numbers, and the artistic merit of a dead animal.
i really think the solution is to drop the rankings entirely, and just give comments to one another. even though they all said completely different things, i enjoyed reading 31 different opinions of my track. i know some people would drop out if they didn’t have the chances to see their name next to a “1st” label, but i like to think most wouldn’t…
organisers, think about it…
Hey! I just read I’ve won a T-Shirt!! )))
Thanx everyone who voted for my song! I did not expect it to end even near the top 3 …To be honest (I dare now ) I made it quickly in 4/5 hours… After the deadline…
One of my favorites was VoodooMagic… Definitely underrated IMHO… The song is very diverse and original… but most of all, what that guy did to get those sounds… incredible! That song deserved more credit…
What I did notice in a lot of songs is that a lot of people still use constant speed change (f002/f004) to get the ‘groovy’ effect instead of the groove settings in the properties menu… What’s the difference?
… Anyway… I was here (bit offtopic) looking for the results of beatbattle 2… Can they still be found anywhere??
GrtZ,
yiNXs
The bad thing about this technique is that it doesn’t work well when you want midi syncing because the speed changes are ignored. And it’s likely that you’ll get an odd BPM number like 123,45 BPM for real. Does anybody know how to calculate the actual BPM when using the f0x command, btw?
I liked the comment-section of the voting system. Very interesting to see what aspects the people see in the songs. Heh, cause mostly the people only writes something if they like a track :] And i did not expect to get onto 5th place, especially while listening to the other contributions. That’s great, thanx people!
