How to achieve Q-Points ( the original REX/RX2 Slicing ) in Renoise ( ? ) Please assist, bring the musical beats ( slicing ) back

Hi there, Great day to you,

How would i emulate/achieve the ( oldschool Recycle/Original Cubase Slice format ) Q-( = ‘quantize’ )Points in Renoise ( ? )

This, for whatever reason, what Propellerhead did to the format, seems almost like an impossible task in 2025 - when it was originally the whole basis for the Recycle format = to be able to set a Sample Start point, based on a Peak in the Audio/Slice -file (( not the SAMPLE START >> The ‘SELECTABLE’ SAMPLE PEAK Location ))

It is basis of so many groovy tracks made in the older version of Cubase, where the support for these kind of Recycle Files, with the real Musical Timing, was / is still present - Such as Prodigy Songs ( made in Cubase ) and Chemical Brother’s beats

Just a couple Ms alteration, in the Q-Point start point, will change the whole feel of the whole track - this is why this is/was the whole basis of Beat Slicing ( originally )

Here is a picture from the 90s Cubase REX with Q-Point ( support, still in effect )

Please assist, bring the musical beats ( slicing ) back

Rex format is somewhat Crippled, so is BeatSlicing overall, without this

Check article about this, when REX was first ( in baby steps being introduced - it is a basic feature of the origins of the whole format, and has to be implemented for musically inspiring flow in/of beats overall.. otherwise, well, the timings sound/are off )

Any workarounds on how to achieve the Q-Points in Renoise, is well appreciated ( ! )

Probably I’m slow but I’m struggling to understand this. When I want to quantize/re-time a sample I usually Render Slices to Phrase and then adjust the notes within the phrase. Do Q-Points have additional functionality or is it just a UI difference?

Yes, I remember the groove templates in the old Cubase and think I’ve asked for it in past feature requests :slight_smile: . I think this tool comes close, being able to copy and paste the slice markers across instruments relatively;

though, pasting it onto a new sample wont change the order, position of the transients in it, only will paste in the slice markers. Perhaps another job for @esaruoho to conquer :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: .

please share me some groove templates, if you have any cubase groove templates. is it a closed format or is there a fileformat info etc?

Hi, the reason many people don’t know the full meaning of this, is bc after Steinberg ( Cubase ) and Logic were sold, and Propellerhead did whatever they did ( not do ) with their fileformat( s ), this caused dropping of the main features & functionality in/of BeatSlicing..

So you are not alone, not knowing the best ( original ) systems for Beatmaking…

Anyhow, it is still the only and best way to maintain groove&feel in&of a composition

  • The Clips Consist of 3 things:
  1. Sample/Clip Start Point
  2. Q-Point ( meaning, the ‘Quantize point’ ) by which the Clip ( timing in/on the track ) is quantized&timed
  3. Sample/Clip End point

This then allows people to transfer the Groove & Feel, of a track, to a whole other set of samples & Slices…, bc the ‘accent’ = Q-Point ( which is ( almost ) always different from Sample Start, on Every Slice, when we talk about acoustic & real life groove ) is the one used for the Quantization ( always ) not Slice Start point ( ever/usually )

I will have to check how to find these formats… may have to use Win XP etc..

I see! I occasionally do a sort of caveman version of this by rendering to a phrase and then manually swapping out hits (you can of course then move the hits around to adjust the feel), but this sounds a lot more powerful and well worth looking into more. Thanks for explaining.

here are couple things about the fileformat ( from the Cubase VST 5.0 Manual )

( will check for the fileformats themselves )

Recycle is free.

but as we know, it’s not the same thing as q-points

What the op wants is extract a groove from a file , these groove markers are then used as groove templates.

The groove markers are mostly ( but not necesarilly ) at the transient sections of a clip.

You can then quantize other loops to these ‘ groove markers “

For example , detect or slice Funky Drummer , save groove file
Load another clip , Quantise transients of this clip to transients ( groove markers ) of funky drummer

It’s pretty common in other daws .

Oh so like Render Slices To Phrase and then using that with another sample?

More or Less yes

kinda like how certain people still peddle around s2000/sp1200 rhythmic patterns / shuffles so that they can be applied to any audio or midi, in ableton live.

i guess.
