swing variations of 50, 54, 58, 60, 62, 66, 70 and 75% as commands?

Swing variations of 50, 54, 58, 60, 62, 66, 70 and 75%

How would I achieve these swing variations using delay by ticks commands in a pattern at default settings ( 4 lines per beat, 12 ticks per line…sequencer resolution 48 parts per quarter note)?

[EDIT]

I found a way to do it here ( in sunvox guide ) :

Hopefully this method of applying swing variations in trackers will match the swing settings of the MPCs.

( EDIT : they will not. These sets of swing variations were created by delaying the second 8th note in every quarter note. Roger Linn’s MPC swing variations were created by delaying the second 16th note in every 8th note ).

Roger Linn:

There are a few factors that have contributed to natural, human-feeling grooves in my drum machines…

Swing – applied to quantized 16th-note beats – is a big part of it. My implementation of swing has always been very simple: I merely delay the second 16th note within each 8th note. In other words, I delay all the even-numbered 16th notes within the beat (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) In my products I describe the swing amount in terms of the ratio of time duration between the first and second 16th notes within each 8th note

…Regarding sequencer resolution, the LM-1 – used on all of those early hits by Prince, Michael Jackson, and many others – had a sequencer resolution of 48 parts per quarter note. (48 parts per quarter note permits swing variations of 50, 54, 58, 60, 62, 66, 70 and 75%, and I rarely need more swing increments than this.)The Tempest has a resolution of 96 parts per quarter note but almost all of the great grooves it makes don’t use more than48 parts per quarter note resolution and often no more than 24.

I wrote a tool that may be of interest, though it is not to do with ticks but the delay column.

The tools main function is to control the global groove settings but it also gives you a readout of the renoise delay column values that match a Linn drum. The precision which the Linn drum can be matched depends on the resolution of the renoise master groove sliders (one percent increments over a different range to the Linn drum), so not always perfect but can get you in the right area:

i.e.:

working at 4LPB:

Moving the main slider unitil the lowest readout Drum Machine shows 54%. This is 54% Linn Drum swing . It matches to a " 16th Note Delay" of 14 which you would add manually the delay column of every other line in renoise

7913 Groove Control 54%.PNG

here shows the the 14 values added manually in a renoise track, delay column; every other line.

7915 groove 14 in pattern editor.PNG

for 58% swing, the closest that the renoise groove sliders get for Drum Machine is 57.9%. Here the renoise delay column value you would add is 28

7914 Groove Control 57.9%.PNG

If using like this, just make sure the Groove Enabled checkbox remains switched off, otherwise you start layering your manually added swing with the renoise global groove settings

https://www.renoise.com/tools/groove-control

Keep in Mind that esp.with the old school MPC Producers, they often used double speed e.g. 90 = 180 BPM.

With this, the Resolution also doubled; same with the SP-1200 (24ppq) doubled to 48ppq’s like an MPC.

Actually the SP-1200 is mad loose in feel on Drums, almost like a human ‘live’ feel; due to its off - beat #swing.

So experimenting a little with half & double - speeds, can do wonders esp. for creating those loose Drums.

renoise sequenzer is (for me) to limited for drums
it lacks at a scalable noteditor as the mpcs have
yes with double speed can be compensated but with that lose renoise also fast his strength the clarity
me rather play/record realtime with an old drumachine + renoise sampler and record midi/audio

I notice many musicians spending countless hours learning how to microscopically edit their music in order to get it to sound right.I can’t help but imagine a skilled drummer quietly chuckling inside when they see someone going to so much trouble in order to avoid learning to play the instrument skillfully. At a certain point, it might just be easier to focus on developing the skill to play it in realtime. If so, an added bonus is that you’d be able to play live with other musicians, which is quite a lot of fun and the resulting serendipity can be wonderful. - Roger Linn

Thats why you can change the LPB?

only larger steps with LPB are possible, that, renoise is great for drum programming
but not so for liveplaying (human feel without quantization)

Using the delay column it is possible to get much more accurate percentage based swing variations:

@Ledger:

It seems I have just created swings based on delaying the second 8th note in every quarter note,

rather than by delaying the second 16th note in every 8th note as Roger Linn described. ( 8th note = half a renoise beat, 16th note = quarter of a renoise beat ).

Thanks for posting the information about your tool. That helped me realise my mistake.

Damn. These swings still sound cool though.

I will do another set of these based on delaying the second 16th note in every 8th note like Roger Linn said.

I bet the percentage values will come out nicer.

O.K, I will post the real Roger Linn Style swing variations tomorrow…

Interesting to see what you`re coming up with here, so thanks for posting up all the results!

Always fun to experiment with this stuff!

O.K, here they are. The first set are the Roger Linn style swing variations ( MPC, Linndrum, Tempest etc. ), the second set are closer to the actual percentages using the delay column…I’ve put all the exact percentages in :
