The Dead Dog`s Renoise Comp Round 1

would it be a nice idea (maybe wait a bit for more competitions to have ended) to have a website for this competition, like there is one for Mutant Breaks? seeing these are weekly, after a while we will have a lot of winners, and maybe people who have won multiple, and we could post an overview or something on the site, and links to the soundcloud-page of each competition? just an idea, thought it might be nice. i would be willing to build something like that, if people are interested…

Once I can be asked I will do a little (very simple!) http and have it up at renoise.deaddogdisko.co.uk but had other things on my mind lately plus I’m very lazy. It is on my ever-growing todo list though!

as i said, i’m willing to build something. with my skills it would be pretty simple too. maybe i could build it for you to upload on that domain? just say the word. will shrink your todo list

Well it looks like we have a late vote and a winner! And well deserved it is too. :)

No1 wins it with 5 votes.

Many congratulations to üav!!

And the entrants were:

  1. üav
  2. rhowaldt
  3. ann3
  4. dupoxy
  5. LokarMD
  6. Mammoth

(Hope I’ve got that all right.)

Off topic:

Rhowaldt; you’re welcome to do something mate. I only know very basic HTML plus CSS and do all my coding in Notepad++ so gotta be better than anything I could come up with. As long as it’s obvious what to edit, copy, paste, add to when I want to add extra sections to it I’d be happy. Not hard to register the sudomain, already have the deaddogdisko.co.uk so subs are easy, just takes up to 24hours to activate.

I would like to say thank you to my mother, to the renoise developers, my wonderful public and of course Kazakore and his dead dog.
I’m opening a beer now!

Mmm beer!

I actually have one in the fridge. Been there ages as I’m usually a cider drinker. Think I may crack it open too :)

goddamnit, who made the final vote! i was sure i was going to win the tie! well, no matter, better luck next time and a well deserved victory for you üav. great track, you had my vote.

@kazakore: concerning the website - i’ll build something. don’t be afraid, my skills are html, css, a bit of javascript (jquery) and a bit of php, and i do all my coding in Notepad++ :) on top of that, i like to think i’m good at writing readable code, so it should not be too hard for you to find where to change what.

i do not know when i’ll get to it though, but seeing this is all fun and no business, we’re not in a hurry.
just wanna give üav his winners-spot on the site (goddamnit!)

I have to admit I found it very hard to choose out of the two of you! Good entries all round really. :)

i liked how üav’s track sounded like the rapper was drowning (((=

dupoxy, i am working on the Dead Dog Renoise Competition Official Website, and would like to use your logo as, well, the logo. if you agree, could you give me a download link? i think the Flickr-version is big enough for me to work with, will probably just stash it in the upper-left corner.

(edit: oh, you may have guessed, but i’d like to have the png, as the site will probably have a black background. if you think you can do some optimization to the image for use on a black background, that would be great too. if not, i will find a way to work with it)

@rhowaldt: thank you dude! I voted for you too!

do what you want with the image, the only one I have is on flickr. A quick png I did for a black background with the gimp https://sites.google.com/site/duperrayolivier/deaddog.png?attredirects=0

thanks man, that’s great, and useful.

Looking fairly nice and clean. Can I request some changes though…

Personally not quite sure about the Listen links and Soundcloud. Is it possible to use their Embed code to put below entrants and votes?

IE:

<object height="205" width="100%"> <param name="movie" value="http://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Fplaylists%2F405820&amp;secret_url=false"> <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> <embed allowscriptaccess="always" height="205" src="http://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Fplaylists%2F405820&amp;secret_url=false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="100%"></embed> </object>[Dead Dog Renoise Competition Round 1](http://soundcloud.com/dead-dog-disko/sets/dead-dog-renoise-competition-round-1) by [Dead Dog Disko](http://soundcloud.com/dead-dog-disko)

Would it be OK to have the Rules and overall links on the Left side of the page? Tracks and votes to the right of that.

Would quite like a table where I can put in provided filetype and quality (eg 320kbs mp3 or 24bit 48kHz Flac etc) although can see that hard to get in neatly. Also needs a space for Xrns provided Yes/No.

Not sure if I should start uploading to Soundcloud at full quality, disable Downloads or just provide a Note saying they have all been converted to 128kbs for Soundcloud and if you want full quality download the Pack. May also separate audio and xrns packs…

This then wouldn’t quite follow the Index layout. I think the few Links there could simply go under the body of text. Link to Forum for each Round I will move to within the Round, whereas you currently have Round1 link in Index.

Few other slight mistakes but I’ll proof read and correct them before making it officially active…

That’s looks really great, good work!

nice site! maybe a playlist link to stream all the entries?

yes, of course that’s possible. i just aimed for a site that does not scroll of the page on most displays. same reason why i did not put the links underneath the text in the index.php, as i figured i’d use the ‘aside’ for that stuff. so i can just move the entire ‘aside’ to the left.

would you like to have the filetype, quality and xrns-stuff next to each person’s name? enough space, should not be a problem to do that. if that is what you mean though, correct me if i misunderstood.

you are correct, and i simply forgot to add this link. i struggled to decide how much i should put on there, and just went for the simplest approach (essentially made it exactly the same - albeit different layout - as the info you get from the forums). the reason i put the link to round1 in the index was that i figured it served as a pretty good ‘introduction’ to the whole competition, but i wasn’t sure about that one and will leave it out.

i’m no native English speaker, so mistakes were bound to slip through. i was mostly concerned with making a nice design and readable, understandable code, so you could change stuff yourself easily.

i’ll provide you with a updated version as soon as i can.

there’s a link to the Soundcloud Set on the right. i put this in because i really liked having all songs on the same page. however, when i make the embedded Soundcloud links, this will not be necessary anymore.

Understood, only checked on my laptop at 1920x1200 but did reduce the size of the window to make sure links started stacking correctly for when there gets more of them and seemed OK as long as you have the minimum width of the header.

Yeah pretty much. Although I’m a bit lazy to upload and link every file individually for the different types I probably should do… Also can’t quite see a way to keep it looking neat unless encapsulated in a table (you may have to give me pointers for tables and php as obviously each round will have different number of entries but it’ll probably be obvious enough.) So I will add a note that full-quality audio and xrns can be attained via the compressed pack links.

Don’t think there was anything else that needed commented on so all I have to say is Nice One Brother!

php is no big deal. as you can (probably) tell from the code, it’s all html+css. the php is simply ‘glue’: it loads other pages where you want them to load in the page. that way you can build a ‘generic’ page, and not repeat big chunks of code each time, but only the reference to the file. the .php extention is just to allow php code in there.

thanks man. appreciate it. i’m working on it right now to get your requests in order.

Yeah had a look and basically looked like exactly what I know from my very basic html and css coding :)

Although getting tables neat, how I want them is something I have struggled with in html in the past, although have managed it on occasion too…
